Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Seeing a student finally understand a hard topic
  • Being your own boss and choosing how you teach
  • Building a name in your area through word of mouth
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Income can be uneven, especially in the first years
  • Parent pressure about marks and ranks, and the rule against promising results
  • Running the business side (fees, rent, staff, paperwork) on top of teaching
Class 11–12 subjects
No set stream. Class 12 in any stream is fine. What matters more is strong marks in the subject you want to teach, and a degree later.
First degree
A graduate degree in the subject you teach (B.Sc., B.A., B.Com or similar). For school-level teaching, a B.Ed helps. Under the central guidelines, a coaching centre cannot hire tutors who are below graduate level.
Entrance exams
No entrance exam is needed for the usual route.
Licence or registration
Tutoring at home with a few students needs no coaching registration. Once you run a centre above your state's student limit, you must register with the local authority. Shops and Establishment and trade licences apply to a rented premises. Rules differ by state.

What the work is like

Planning lessons and tests, teaching batches, marking work, answering parent and student queries, handling fees and admissions, and running the business side: rent, staff, GST and records.

A day in the work
A typical day starts with preparing a lesson plan or checking homework from the last batch. You then teach two or three batches, in person or online, and answer doubts from students and parents. In the evening you mark tests, record fees, and plan the next week's topics. If you run a centre, you also handle rent, staff and paperwork.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–12Build strong marks in the subjects you want to teach. Try explaining topics to younger students at home or in school. This shows whether you enjoy teaching before you commit to a degree.
  2. Step 2 · Graduation (3 years)Take a degree in your teaching subject. For school subjects, add a B.Ed later if you want. The central guidelines say tutors must be graduates, so this is not optional for a registered centre.
  3. Step 3 · First 1–2 yearsStart with home tuition or small online groups. A tutor with a handful of students usually sits below the registration limits. Learn what parents expect, and track results and fees honestly. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · When you grow past the limitRegister the centre with the competent authority in your area, as your state requires. The Centre's 2024 model guidelines use 50 students as the trigger, but some states set a lower or higher number. Each branch needs its own registration.
  5. Step 5 · Business set-upGet a Shops and Establishment registration and a municipal trade licence for your premises. Register for GST once your turnover crosses the threshold. Deadlines and fees vary by city and state. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. OngoingPublish your fees, tutor qualifications, course details and refund policy. Give receipts. Do not promise ranks or marks. The central guidelines bar these promises, and rules are tighter in some states.

  • Home tuitionone tutor, a few students, no premises needed at first.
  • Online classeslive or recorded lessons for students anywhere. GST applies once turnover is above the threshold.

What people earn

Income varies a lot. It depends on the subject you teach, the class level, your city or town, whether you teach school or competitive-exam students, and how many batches you run. Early years are usually slow, and steady income often takes time to build.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must have topped exams yourself to start a coaching business.
Fact: The central rules require a graduate degree for tutors. They do not require a topper's record. The rules also ban guaranteed ranks or marks, so honest teaching matters more than past rankings.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Teach one topic a week to a younger cousin or neighbour. Keep a short note of what they understood and what confused them.
  • Class 10–12Pick one chapter you know well. Explain it aloud to a friend, then ask them to quiz you. Notice where your explanation breaks down.
  • College or afterEnrol free in an NPTEL course in a subject you plan to teach, or in a topic about learning. Enrolling is free; the optional certificate exam has a fee, so skip it if money is tight.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • Being a topper is not required. The rules ask for a graduate tutor and honest claims. Teaching skill and clear results count for more.
  • Under the central guidelines, a coaching centre cannot enrol students below 16 or before they finish Class 10.
  • Coaching fees attract 18% GST once turnover crosses ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in special-category states). Small home tutors below that need not register. (reported)
  • State laws are changing fast. Rajasthan has its own Act, and other states have drafts or new rules. Check your state's current rules before you open. (reported)
