Applying to UK universities
Short answers for parents. More in how UCAS works and the UK dates.
For parents
What is UCAS?
The one website every UK undergraduate application goes through. One form reaches up to 5 universities.
How much does it cost to apply?
£34.50 for 2027 entry, the same for 1 or 5 choices. Tuition, visa and test fees are separate.
When is the deadline?
13 January 2027, 11:30 pm India time, for most courses. For Oxford, Cambridge and medicine it was 15 October 2026.
What if we miss 13 January?
You can still apply until 30 June 2027, but only for courses with places left. Popular courses may already be full.
Can I speak to UCAS or a university for my child?
Only if your child names you for “nominated access” in the application. Otherwise they won't discuss it with you.
Does the school need to do anything?
Yes. A teacher must add a reference and predicted marks before the application can be sent. Ask early.
Should we ask the school for higher predicted marks?
No. Inflated predictions can lead to offers your child can't meet, and offers can be withdrawn.
Do UK universities accept CBSE, ICSE or state board marks?
Yes. Each university sets its own Class 12 percentage and English test needs. Check the course page.
What does a conditional offer mean?
A place, if your child gets the stated Class 12 marks.
What happens if my child misses the reply date?
UCAS declines all their offers. The reply date is shown in their UCAS account.
What else will the UK cost beyond fees?
A visa fee, the Immigration Health Surcharge, and proof of money for living costs. Check current amounts on gov.uk.
Should someone else hold my child's UCAS login?
No. The login should stay with your child. No helper, including us, should ask for the password.
