What the work is like

Drafting and checking contracts, advising business teams on legal risk, handling regulatory compliance, supporting deals such as mergers, managing disputes, and working with outside law firms when needed.

A day in the work
A typical morning starts with reading emails from business teams who need a contract checked or a quick legal view. You might spend the middle of the day redlining a supplier agreement or joining a call with sales staff to explain a clause. Later you may review a regulator's new notice and tell managers what it means for their work. Most days end with notes for the board or a call with an outside law firm.

The path, step by step

  1. Class 10–12Choose any stream. Keep your Class 12 marks above 45% (40% for SC/ST/PwD), because that is the minimum to apply for most law courses. Build a habit of reading news and simple legal explainers in English.
  2. Class 12 (CLAT 2027 cycle)Register on the Consortium of NLUs website and sit CLAT. The 2027 test is on 6 December 2026. It is a 2-hour, 120-question pen-and-paper test with negative marking. Registration closes on 31 October 2026. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. 5 yearsStudy for a 5-year integrated LLB at a college recognised by the Bar Council of India. Attend at least 70% of classes in each subject, or you cannot sit that subject's end-semester test.
  4. During the courseDo internships with law firms, courts, government bodies and company legal teams. Take part in moot courts and drafting workshops. Practise writing contracts and notices.
  5. After graduationApply to company legal teams, usually as a junior legal officer or associate. Many roles ask for some years of experience, so many people first work in a law firm or litigation. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. If you want court workEnrol with a State Bar Council and clear the All India Bar Examination. This is not needed for every in-house job, so check each job advert. (reported — check with the official body)

What people earn

Pay depends on the company, its size, the city and your experience, and it rises a lot after the first few years.

Myth and fact

Myth: In-house counsel is just a court lawyer who works for one company.
Fact: Much of the work is drafting, negotiating and advising, and many in-house lawyers rarely appear in court. Some never need to enrol as advocates, though this depends on the employer.

For girls and students with disabilities

The CLAT minimum is 40% for SC/ST/PwD candidates instead of 45%. PwD candidates get extra time, with the test running until 4:40 PM instead of 4:00 PM.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Pick one everyday law topic each month, such as consumer rights or how a rental agreement works. Write three lines in your own words about what it means for a shopkeeper and a buyer.Open link ↗
  • Class 10–12Join your school's debate or Model United Nations club. Practise making a short, reasoned argument on one current issue each week.
  • College or afterJoin a moot court society or write a short mock contract for a small business. Then take a free NPTEL course on contract or company law to see if you enjoy it.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • The degree must come from a college approved by the Bar Council of India. Distance or correspondence LLB degrees are not recognised for enrolment.
  • Many in-house jobs are mostly contracts, compliance and advice. Court work is only part of the role at some companies.
  • Most people start in a law firm or as a junior in a legal team, then move in-house after a few years.
