What the work is like
Preparing the operation theatre and sterilised instruments, setting up anaesthesia equipment, helping the surgeon and anaesthetist during surgery, monitoring the patient, and keeping the room infection-free.
A day in the work
A shift often starts before the first surgery. You check that the theatre is clean, sterile packs are ready, and the anaesthesia machine and suction are working. During surgery you pass instruments to the surgeon, keep count of swabs and watch monitors with the anaesthetist. After the case you clean the room, record what was used and get it ready for the next patient.
