Your school's subject sheet decides more than you think.
Copy the sheet your school gives you, or try an example. See which subject mixes the school really allows, and which careers your child's mix keeps open.
How subject blocks work
- Subjects run at the same time
A school can't timetable every subject separately, so it puts them in blocks (also called clusters or option lines).
- One from each block
You take one subject from each block. Two subjects in the same block can't be taken together at that school.
- The blocks decide the doors
Every school sets its blocks differently. The same child could keep a career open at one school and not at another.

- For NEET, Cambridge students need to pass AS Level English Language; JEE Main needs one language. The compulsory English Language here covers this if it is taken at AS Level, so confirm with the school.
- Indian colleges and entrance exams treat A Levels as Class 12 through an AIU equivalence certificate.
This checks subjects only. Marks, age limits and each college's own rules also matter: each career page has them.
Six questions to ask the school before you choose
- Is this year's sheet the same as the one we have? Blocks change from year to year.
- If enough students ask, can a block be changed or a subject offered twice?
- Which Class 10 subjects (and grades) do you expect before each Class 11 subject?
- Until when can my child switch a subject after starting?
- Cambridge schools: is English taken at AS Level? NEET needs AS Level English Language.
- Do you help families get the AIU equivalence certificate for Indian colleges and exams?
There is usually a way round it.
Some schools move a subject if enough students ask. Others allow a subject to be added later, and some doors can be reopened after Class 12.
