After 12th PCM: good paths beyond JEE

Facts checked 16/10/2026

For many PCM families, JEE is the whole plan. It is a good plan, but it is one exam. PCM opens many other strong routes, and most of them have their own exams on their own dates.

Below are the main ones, with rules we could check. Rules change yearly, so confirm on the official site before applying.

Other ways into engineering

  • BITSAT (BITS Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad campuses): reported for 2026 as needing 75% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Maths, with at least 60% in each.
  • State CETs: Karnataka's KCET is run by the Karnataka Examinations Authority for engineering in the state. Maharashtra's MHT CET for 2026 asked for Physics and Maths compulsory plus one more listed subject, with 45% in those subjects (40% for reserved categories from Maharashtra), as reported. Most states have their own CET.
  • COMEDK UGET (about 150 private engineering colleges in Karnataka): Physics, Maths and English compulsory, with 45% in Physics, Chemistry and Maths together (40% for Karnataka SC/ST/OBC). The 2026 exam was on 9 May.
  • VITEEE (VIT campuses): 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Maths, with at least 50% in Maths (50% aggregate for SC/ST and some regions). The 2026 exam ran from 28 April to 3 May.

Paths at a glance

Path Exam or route Eligibility essentials
B.Stat (Kolkata), B.Math (Bengaluru) at ISI ISI Admission Test (10 May in 2026) Class 12 with Maths and English
Data science at ISI (B.SDS) ISI Admission Test Maths or Applied Maths and English, 75% aggregate (65% SC/ST/PwBD) for 2026
B.S. (Hons) Maths, Maths & CS, Maths & Physics at CMI CMI entrance (15 May 2027, 2 pm) Class 12; applications expected around 1 March 2027
BS-MS at IISERs, and BS at IISc and a few others IISER Aptitude Test (7 June in 2026) Three of PCMB, 60% aggregate (55% SC/ST/PwD), as reported
Integrated M.Sc at NISER and UM-DAE CEBS NEST (6 June in 2026) Three of PCMB, 60% aggregate (55% SC/ST/PwD), no age limit
B.Arch NATA or JEE Main Paper 2A Physics and Maths compulsory, 45% aggregate under the 2023 regulation
B.Des UCEED (IIT Bombay), NID DAT Open to any stream; NID has date-of-birth limits
BCA, B.Sc Computer Science CUET UG or university tests Set by each university; many want Maths
NDA (Air Force, Navy wings) UPSC NDA exam, twice a year PCM needed for Air Force and Navy; any stream for Army, as reported
Merchant navy (B.Sc Nautical Science) IMU CET 60% PCM average, 50% English in Class 10 or 12, unmarried, strict eyesight rules
Commercial pilot DGCA licence via a flying school Physics and Maths in Class 12, age 18, Class 1 medical, as reported
Actuarial science ACET (Institute of Actuaries of India) Class 12 passed or appearing; any stream, strong maths

Maths, statistics and research science

If your child loves maths for its own sake, ISI and CMI are worth a look. Their entrance tests are maths-heavy and quite unlike JEE, so they need separate practice.

For pure science, the IISER Aptitude Test and NEST both lead to five-year BS-MS or integrated M.Sc courses. A few IISER courses need Maths in Class 12.

Architecture and design

B.Arch needs Physics and Maths. NATA is run by the Council of Architecture, and JEE Main Paper 2A is used for B.Arch at NITs and some other institutes. Paper 2A has Maths, an aptitude test and a drawing test.

Design is open to every stream. UCEED 2027 registration closes on 31 October 2026 (late fee until 6 November), as reported, and the exam is on 17 January 2027. NID DAT Prelims are reported for 20 December 2026, with applications open until 30 November.

Defence, sea and sky

  • NDA: for Air Force and Navy wings, Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths is required. There are age limits, and both young men and women can apply.
  • Merchant navy: IMU CET leads to nautical science and marine engineering courses. Medical fitness, especially eyesight and colour vision, is checked strictly.
  • Aviation: a commercial pilot licence needs Physics and Maths in Class 12, a DGCA medical and flying training at an approved school. Training is costly, so check fees and the school's DGCA approval first.

Economics, data and actuarial work

Economics, statistics and data science degrees suit PCM students, and many admit through CUET. Actuarial work is a quieter option: you can write ACET right after Class 12, and the result is valid for three years.

What to do now

  1. Keep JEE if your child wants it, and add one or two other exams they would actually enjoy.
  2. Check dates early. Many 2027 dates are not announced yet. We keep a running list at /dates, but always confirm on the official site.
  3. Watch the overlaps. Many of these exams fall between April and June.

If you want help picking a realistic mix, our Clarity + Path (India) package covers career clarity, course choice and an India college shortlist over several sessions.
