Data science after 12th, by stream
Facts checked 16/10/2026
"Data science" is one of the most searched course names after Class 12. That also means many colleges now put the label on courses that are quite different inside. This guide explains what the work really is, and the routes into it from each stream.
What data science work really is
In plain words, data science is using data to answer questions. A shop wants to know which products sell in which season. A hospital wants to know which patients may need to return. Someone has to collect the data, clean it, look for patterns and explain what they found.
The daily work usually mixes three things:
- Maths and statistics, to know whether a pattern is real or just chance.
- Programming, often in Python or SQL, to handle large amounts of data.
- Understanding the field, whether that is business, health, sports or government.
So the honest truth is this: some comfort with maths is needed. You do not need to be a topper, but you cannot avoid it.
If you took PCM
You have the widest choice.
- B.Tech in Computer Science, or in AI and Data Science. Admission is through JEE Main, JEE Advanced or state tests like KCET, or a private university's own test.
- B.Sc in Statistics, Mathematics or Computer Science. A strong, often cheaper route. Statistics is the core of data work.
- ISI B.Stat (Hons). The Indian Statistical Institute's three-year B.Stat is offered only at Kolkata. It needs Maths and English in Class 12. Admission is through ISI's own written tests, and for 2026 the stipend was ₹5,000 a month. ISI also runs a four-year Bachelor of Statistical Data Science, which for 2026 needed at least 75% in Class 12 and charged ₹1 lakh tuition per semester, with full or partial waivers for some students.
- IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Applications (more below).
If you took Commerce
With Maths in Class 12: B.Sc in Economics or Statistics, B.Com or BBA with analytics, and BCA are all real options. Many colleges ask for Maths in Class 12 for these, so check each one. The IIT Madras BS is also open to you.
Without Maths in Class 12: Be honest about the gap. Many B.Sc Statistics, BCA and B.Tech courses will not accept you. You can still:
- Apply for the IIT Madras BS, which expects Maths only in Class 10.
- Take a BBA or B.Com and add statistics and data courses alongside.
- Do a bridge course in basic maths before you start.
The maths will still come later. It is better to face it early than to be surprised in the first semester.
If you took Arts or PCB
The IIT Madras BS is the clearest open door. Beyond that:
- Arts students with Economics or Psychology can move towards data through statistics electives, an economics degree at a college that accepts students without Class 12 Maths, or a master's later.
- PCB students can look at biostatistics and health data. These often start from a life sciences degree with added statistics.
In both cases, plan for extra maths study. Free online courses and a good school-level algebra and statistics revision are a sensible start.
The IIT Madras BS, in plain terms
- Who can apply: anyone who has passed Class 12, from any stream and of any age. Students who have finished Class 11 can also apply and join after Class 12. IIT Madras expects you to have studied Maths and English in Class 10.
- How you get in: no JEE needed. You study four weeks of online content (English, Maths, Statistics and Computational Thinking), submit weekly assignments, and then sit an in-person qualifier exam. There is no fixed seat limit.
- How it runs: classes are online, with in-person exams at set centres each term. There are three terms a year.
- Exit points: you can leave with a foundation certificate, a diploma, a BSc or the full BS degree. IIT Madras says completion can take up to eight years, depending on your pace.
- Next deadline: applications for the January 2027 term close on 29 January 2027.
It is real work, and it is self-paced, so it needs discipline. Some students take it alongside a regular college degree, so ask about the workload first. Check the official site for current fees and rules.
Skills over labels
Two degrees with the same name can teach very different things. Before you choose, look at the syllabus:
- Is there real statistics, not just one course?
- Is there programming every year?
- Are there projects with real data?
A B.Sc Statistics student who builds projects can be better prepared than a "Data Science" student who did not. The label matters less than what you can actually do.
