Master's after graduation: your options in India, explained simply
Facts checked 17/10/2026
You've finished your degree, or you're in the final year. Now everyone asks: "Master's next?" Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes it's "work first". Sometimes it's "a different subject altogether". This guide lays out how master's work in India now, so you can choose calmly.
First: do you need a master's right now?
A master's helps most when:
- the job needs it — teaching in colleges, research, many science and engineering roles, clinical psychology, specialist medicine;
- you want to switch fields — for example from B.Com to data science, or B.Sc to public policy;
- you want a credential that employers ask for — an MBA from a strong school, an M.Tech for core engineering.
It helps less when you're doing it only because you're not sure what else to do. In that case, a year of work or a focused gap year often gives you a better reason — and a better application.
1-year or 2-year master's? It depends on your degree
Under the UGC's postgraduate framework (June 2024):
| Your first degree | Your master's |
|---|---|
| 4-year bachelor's (Honours, or Honours with Research) | 1 year (2 semesters) |
| 3-year bachelor's | 2 years (4 semesters) |
| 4-year B.E. / B.Tech | 2-year M.E. / M.Tech |
Colleges are moving to this at different speeds, so check each programme's own rules.
Can I switch subjects?
Yes. You can do a master's in the main (major) or minor subject of your degree. You can also move to any subject by qualifying a national or university entrance exam in that subject. Engineering and science graduates can also apply for M.Tech in related areas.
Straight to a PhD after a 4-year degree
Under the UGC PhD Regulations 2022, a graduate of a 4-year (8-semester) bachelor's can apply directly for a PhD with at least 75% marks (or the equivalent grade), with a 5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer), differently-abled, EWS and other notified categories. You may see "7.5 CGPA" in older news — that was the draft rule.

MBA: now, or after some work?
Freshers do get into top IIMs. But at IIM Ahmedabad's 2026–28 batch, about three in four students had work experience (average about 2 years). Some IIMs give marks for work experience when shortlisting.
So a common, sensible path is: work 1–3 years, then take CAT. Your CAT score is only for one admission year, but you'll be a stronger candidate, and you'll know better what you want from an MBA. If you're applying straight after college, apply — just have a job plan too.
M.Tech: GATE does two jobs
A GATE score is used for M.Tech/M.E. admission at IITs, NITs and others, and many public sector companies (PSUs) also use it to hire engineers. Your score is valid for 3 years from the result, so you can work for a while and still use it for admission.
Questions to ask any programme before you pay
- Is it a 1-year or 2-year programme, and does my degree qualify?
- Which entrance exam and cut-off do you actually use?
- What did last year's graduates go on to do? (Ask for real numbers, not "100% placement".)
- What is the full fee, including hostel, and what is the refund rule if I leave in the first month?
Thinking of a master's abroad?
That's a separate decision with its own rules — 3-year degrees, work visas, costs. See Master's abroad after an Indian degree.
