Scholarships for Indian students abroad

Facts checked 16/10/2026

Many families hear "fully funded scholarship" and picture it paying for a bachelor's degree abroad. That does happen, but rarely. Most of the large, well-known awards are for a master's, and many of them also want work experience first.

This guide gives you the honest picture: what exists, who it is really for, and how early you need to start.

The honest picture: master's, not bachelor's

Look at the big government awards open to Indians and a pattern shows up:

  • Chevening (UK) wants at least two years of work experience after your degree.
  • Fulbright-Nehru Master's (US) wants at least three years of paid, full-time work in your field.
  • Commonwealth Master's (UK) is for people who could not otherwise afford UK study, and only for one-year taught master's.
  • National Overseas Scholarship (Government of India) covers master's and PhD only. Its rules say bachelor's courses are not covered.
  • K C Mahindra says plainly that students going abroad for undergraduate study are not eligible.

So if your child is in Class 11 or 12 and dreaming of a free bachelor's degree abroad, plan for partial help, not full funding. For undergraduate study, most money comes from the university's own merit awards. Check each university's scholarship page early. There are a few government awards too. The Dutch NL Scholarship, for example, is open to bachelor's students, but it is a one-time €5,000 in the first year, not full tuition.

Start about a year ahead

The big awards close long before the course starts. A few real timelines:

  • Chevening 2027–28: opened in August 2026 and closed in October 2026. Interviews are in March–April 2027 and studies start in September/October 2027. You also need an unconditional offer from a UK university by July 2027.
  • Commonwealth Master's 2027–28: Indian applicants are nominated through the Ministry of Education. The commission's own deadline is 20 October 2026, for study from September 2027.
  • Fulbright-Nehru Master's: the last round closed on 14 May 2025 for courses beginning in August/September 2026. That is about 15 months ahead.
  • Inlaks: you must already hold an offer, and applications are reviewed in April for the same year's intake.

A simple rule: start looking 12–18 months before you want to start the course. For a September 2028 start, that means mid-2027.

Loan-scholarships: read the word "loan"

Some well-known awards are really loans you repay, often on kind terms. The J N Tata Endowment gives loan scholarships for higher studies abroad, and a guarantor signs the agreement. The K C Mahindra award is an interest-free loan. These are useful, but count them as borrowed money in your budget, not as a gift.

How to judge a "scholarship" from an agent or university

Families often hear "your child got a scholarship" during admissions. Before you celebrate, ask:

  • Is money actually paid, or is the fee just lower? Many "scholarships" are a cut in tuition. That is helpful, but compare it with the full cost: rent, food, insurance, travel.
  • Is it conditional? Some discounts only apply if you pay a deposit by a short deadline, or keep a certain grade every year. Ask what happens in year two.
  • Is it for every student? If everyone admitted gets the same "merit award", it is really the normal price.
  • Who is telling you? Get it in writing from the university, not only from the agent. It is fair to ask the agent whether the university pays them.
  • Is someone asking for a fee to "process" a scholarship? Go to the official page and apply there yourself.

A good test: write down the total cost for the full course after the award. That number is what matters.
