UK university deadlines for 2027 entry: a guide for Indian families

Facts checked 14/10/2026

If your child wants to start a UK degree in September 2027, two dates matter most. 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses. 13 January 2027 for almost everything else. Both close at 6 pm UK time, which is late evening in India.

The two main deadlines

15 October 2026, 10:30 pm India time. This is for any course at Oxford or Cambridge, and most courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary science. These courses are very competitive, so universities rarely look at late applications.

13 January 2027, 11:30 pm India time. This is the main deadline for most UK undergraduate courses. Apply by then and every university you chose must consider you equally.

The India time changes because the UK moves its clocks back in late October.

"Submitted" means the school reference too

The deadline is for the complete application, including the reference from your child's school. The application can't be sent until that reference is in.

So plan to finish at least two to three weeks early. That gives the school time to write the reference and add predicted marks.

What if you miss 13 January?

You can still apply until 30 June 2027. Universities may consider you if they still have places, but they don't have to. Many UK universities do accept international students later in the year, so it is worth checking each course.

After 30 June, applications go into Clearing. That is a list of courses with places still open, from 2 July. The final date for any 2027 application is 23 September 2027.

After you apply: the dates people forget

Universities reply at different times, sometimes within weeks, sometimes months later. Once all replies are in, your child must answer by a set date. Miss it and UCAS declines all the offers.

If all decisions arrive by Reply by
31 March 2027 5 May 2027
12 May 2027 2 June 2027
14 July 2027 21 July 2027

The exact reply date shows in the student's UCAS account. It may be different from a friend's.

Taking a gap year?

Your child can apply in this same cycle to start in 2028. The dates and rules are the same. Check first that each university accepts deferred entry for that course.

What to do now

  • Applying for Oxford, Cambridge or medicine: check the reference is done well before 15 October.
  • Applying for other courses: aim to submit by mid-December, before school holidays.
  • Check each course's deadline in the UCAS search tool. A few differ.

Quick answers: UK applications

For parents

What is UCAS?

The one website every UK undergraduate application goes through. One form reaches up to 5 universities.

How much does it cost to apply?

£34.50 for 2027 entry, the same for 1 or 5 choices. Tuition, visa and test fees are separate.

When is the deadline?

13 January 2027, 11:30 pm India time, for most courses. For Oxford, Cambridge and medicine it was 15 October 2026.

What if we miss 13 January?

You can still apply until 30 June 2027, but only for courses with places left. Popular courses may already be full.

Can I speak to UCAS or a university for my child?

Only if your child names you for “nominated access” in the application. Otherwise they won't discuss it with you.

Does the school need to do anything?

Yes. A teacher must add a reference and predicted marks before the application can be sent. Ask early.

Should we ask the school for higher predicted marks?

No. Inflated predictions can lead to offers your child can't meet, and offers can be withdrawn.

Do UK universities accept CBSE, ICSE or state board marks?

Yes. Each university sets its own Class 12 percentage and English test needs. Check the course page.

What does a conditional offer mean?

A place, if your child gets the stated Class 12 marks.

What happens if my child misses the reply date?

UCAS declines all their offers. The reply date is shown in their UCAS account.

What else will the UK cost beyond fees?

A visa fee, the Immigration Health Surcharge, and proof of money for living costs. Check current amounts on gov.uk.

Should someone else hold my child's UCAS login?

No. The login should stay with your child. No helper, including us, should ask for the password.

For students

How many universities can I apply to?

Up to 5 courses. No more than 4 in medicine, dentistry or vet science, and only one of Oxford or Cambridge.

Can universities see where else I applied?

No, and the order you list them in doesn't matter.

What is the personal statement now?

Three short answers in 4,000 characters: why this course, how your studies prepared you, and what else you've done. At least 350 characters each.

Can I write a different statement for each university?

No. One statement goes to all 5, so keep it focused on one subject area.

Can I use AI or a sample statement?

It must be your own work. UCAS checks every statement for copying.

Can I upload my mark sheets and IELTS score?

Yes, new for 2027. Uploading is optional, but it helps universities decide faster.

What's a firm and an insurance choice?

Firm is the offer you want most. Insurance is an optional backup that needs lower marks.

I got no offers. Is it over?

No. From 25 February you can use Extra to add one course at a time, and Clearing opens on 2 July.

Can I take a gap year?

Yes. Apply in this cycle and choose a 2028 start, if the course allows it.

Can I change my mind after accepting?

You have 14 days after accepting to change your mind.
