Which stream after 10th: a parent's guide
Facts checked 14/10/2026
"Science, Commerce or Arts?" sounds like one big choice. In CBSE it is really a choice of five subjects. That makes it smaller, and more flexible, than it feels.
How Class 11 subjects actually work (CBSE)
CBSE's senior school is built on subjects, not streams:
- Your child takes at least 5 subjects in Class 11 and continues them in Class 12.
- One must be English or Hindi.
- The rest can be any mix of academic or skill subjects. An optional 6th subject can replace a main subject if your child fails it.
So "Science" is just a common bundle (Physics, Chemistry, Maths and/or Biology). Your child can also take Psychology with Biology, or Economics with Physics and Maths, if the school offers it. Schools only teach what they can staff, so ask early.
A few pairs can't be taken together: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics; Business Studies and Business Administration; and more than one of Computer Science, Informatics Practices and IT.
Which subjects keep which doors open
This is the part that matters most. Some degrees need certain Class 12 subjects.
| If your child might want… | They will need in Class 12 |
|---|---|
| Engineering (B.Tech at NITs, IIITs through JEE Main) | Physics and Mathematics, plus Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject. Also 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD), or a place in the top 20 percentile of their board |
| Architecture (B.Arch through JEE Main) | Physics and Mathematics, 45% overall |
| Medicine, dental, AYUSH (through NEET) | Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English, with practicals |
| Economics (Hons) at Delhi University | Mathematics or Applied Mathematics |
| B.Com (Hons) at Delhi University | Either Mathematics/Applied Mathematics, or Accountancy |
| B.Sc (Hons) Maths or Statistics at Delhi University | Mathematics or Applied Mathematics |
Two useful details:
- NEET subjects can be added later. Since a National Medical Commission notice of November 2023, students can clear Physics, Chemistry and Biology as additional subjects after Class 12 and still be eligible for NEET. It is a longer road, but not a closed one.
- CUET is flexible, but universities may not be. CUET lets students choose up to 5 test subjects regardless of their Class 12 subjects. But each university sets its own rules. Delhi University, for example, asks students to take CUET in the subjects they studied in Class 12.
The one subject that closes the most doors when dropped is Mathematics. If your child is unsure, keeping Maths (or at least Applied Maths) keeps engineering, economics, data, statistics and many commerce degrees open. Applied Mathematics is accepted for Economics and B.Com at Delhi University; for engineering, take Mathematics.
A calm way to decide, together
- Start from what your child enjoys and does well in Class 9–10, not from what relatives say pays well. Enjoyment keeps a student going for two hard years.
- List 2–3 degrees they might want, and check the table above. Pick subjects that keep all of them open.
- Ask the school what it really offers — subjects, combinations, and how many seats.
- Have a first and a second choice before the Class 10 results. Results day is a bad day to decide from scratch.
- Remember it is not a life sentence. India's National Education Policy 2020 asks for no hard walls between arts, sciences and vocational subjects, and many degrees accept students from any stream.
If you and your child disagree, that is normal. A neutral conversation often helps more than another debate at the dinner table. Our Career Clarity package includes a full psychometric assessment with our partner iDreamCareer, a 60–90 minute debrief, and a one-page written career roadmap.
