Job skills by sector
Not everyone wants a three-year degree first. India's Sector Skill Councils set the standards for hands-on jobs in each industry, and certify the people trained for them.
How it works, in four lines
- Sector Skill CouncilsIndustry-led bodies, set up through the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). Each one decides what a worker in its industry must be able to do, and tests and certifies trainees.
- NSQF levelsApproved skill qualifications are placed on the National Skills Qualifications Framework, which runs from level 1 to level 8 (revised in June 2023). Higher levels mean more complex work.
- NCVETThe National Council for Vocational Education and Training is the regulator. It approves who may award and assess skill certificates.
- Check before you payEvery approved qualification is listed on the National Qualifications Register (nqr.gov.in). Ask any training centre for the qualification's name and NSQF level, and look it up.
A skill certificate is not a degree. It is proof you can do a particular job, to a national standard. Many students do both: a degree, plus a short certified course in a job skill.
Skill subjects at school
CBSE offers skill subjects from Class 6. Each Class 9–12 subject is linked to a real job role and mapped to an NSQF level. Your school offers only some of them, so ask which.
Artificial Intelligence · Coding · Financial Literacy · Design Thinking · Digital Citizenship · Mass Media · Photography · Baking · Pottery · Rockets and satellites
A sample of 34 modules. NEP 2020 also asks for 10 “bagless days” in Class 6–8, spent learning from local craftspeople and experts.
Retail · Information Technology · Introduction to Financial Markets · Introduction to Tourism · Beauty & Wellness · Front Office Operations · Marketing & Sales · Artificial Intelligence
Every student takes Vocational Education (Kaushal Vikas). The subjects above are optional extras, if your school offers them. CBSE notification 88/2026.
Information Technology · Artificial Intelligence · Data Science · Health Care · Agriculture · Food Production · Banking & Insurance · Electronics & Hardware · Physical Activity Trainer · Design Thinking & Innovation
A sample of 22 subjects in the 2025–26 list.
Artificial Intelligence · Data Science · Web Application · Taxation · Mass Media Studies · Fashion Studies · Geospatial Technology · Medical Diagnostics · Yoga · Early Childhood Care & Education
A sample of the full list.
A useful safety net in Class 10: if a student fails Science, Maths or Social Science but passes a skill subject taken as a sixth subject, the skill subject can take its place. (Last confirmed in CBSE's 2025–26 scheme; ask your school if it still applies to your batch.)
