US Early Applications Close on 1 November: Early Decision or Early Action?
Published 28/10/2026

In short: Sunday, 1 November 2026 is the early application deadline at many US universities, including Harvard and Penn. The word "early" hides very different promises: one kind of early application commits the family to that college if the student gets in. This matters to every Class 12 student applying to the US this year, and even more to the parents who will pay.
What happened
The US admissions year has two main rounds. The early round closes in the first days of November and gives decisions in mid-December. The regular round closes around January, and decisions come in spring; the exact month varies by college. Three examples, checked on the universities' own pages today:
- Harvard (Restrictive Early Action): deadline 1 November, 11:59 pm local time. Not binding. Decisions in mid-December. If admitted, the student has until 1 May to reply.
- Penn (Early Decision): deadline 1 November 2026. Binding: if admitted, the student must accept and enrol. Decisions in December.
- MIT (Early Action): deadline in early November. Not binding. Decisions in mid-December. MIT says it gives no preference to early applicants.
The College Board, which runs the SAT, explains the difference plainly. Early Decision (ED) is binding, allowed at only one college, and the student must withdraw other applications if admitted. Early Action (EA) gives an early answer without any commitment. Restrictive Early Action is not binding either, but blocks most other early applications.

For students: four days, three questions
1. Which plan am I actually choosing? Read the plan's name on each college's own admissions page, not on a list. "Early" on a forum tells you nothing about whether it is binding.
2. Would I truly go there if admitted? Only use Early Decision for a college you would choose over every other offer, including Indian options. Once admitted under ED, you can't wait to compare.
3. Am I breaking someone's rules? Restrictive Early Action has rules of its own. Harvard, for example, does not allow an early application to another private US college at the same time. It does allow non-binding early applications to public US universities and to universities outside the US. If you have both on your list, check each college's rules today.
Practical steps:
- Make sure your school counsellor has sent, or will send, the school report and predicted marks. Harvard lets counsellors send supporting papers up to a week after the deadline; other colleges may differ.
- Submit by Saturday, 31 October in India. Deadlines are in US or "local" time, and portals slow down near the cut-off. Don't leave it to the last hour.
- Keep a copy of every submitted form and the confirmation email.

For parents: the money question comes first
Early Decision locks in the aid offer too. The College Board notes that ED applicants get their admission and their financial aid offer together, so there is nothing to compare it with. For families who need a lot of aid, it says applying early may be a risky option. Talk about the budget before your child signs, not after the December result.
The aid forms have their own early dates. Harvard asks Restrictive Early Action applicants to send the aid application by 1 November, so aid information can come with the decision. Each college sets its own forms and dates, so check the financial aid page of every college on the list.
Early Decision needs your signature. The College Board says the student, a parent and the school counsellor usually sign the ED agreement. Read it before you sign.
A "defer" is not a "no". Early applicants may be admitted, refused or deferred. MIT, for example, reconsiders deferred students in the regular round, with decisions in mid-March.
