Agricultural Engineer
Designs farm machinery, irrigation, storage and processing systems to improve farming.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Mixing Maths and Physics with real, visible problems on farms
- Working outdoors, with machines, water and soil
- Helping farmers save water, labour and crop losses
- Government posts are few and appear only when a state advertises them
- Field work can mean heat, dust, travel and postings in rural areas
- It is a 4-year engineering degree with Maths and Physics throughout, not a light farming course
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM). Most agricultural universities ask for PCM for B.Tech Agricultural Engineering. A few also accept other combinations, such as PCB or Agriculture subjects, so check the university-wise table in the ICAR bulletin. The minimum age to apply was 16 years on 31 August 2026. Minimum Class 12 marks differ by university and category (reported: about 50%, and 40% for reserved categories).
- First degree
- B.Tech Agricultural Engineering, 4 years (ICAR lists B.Tech Agricultural Engineering among its four-year bachelor's programmes). An M.Tech in areas like Soil and Water Conservation, Irrigation and Drainage, or Processing and Food Engineering is optional.
- Entrance exams
- CUET (ICAR-UG), run by NTA, for the ICAR quota seats in agricultural universities. This replaced the old separate ICAR AIEEA (UG) exam. In CUET you must choose Physics, Chemistry and Maths, and they must match what you studied in Class 12. Other seats are filled through state agricultural universities' own tests or state CETs, or through JEE Main at some colleges (reported). Check each college's own admission page.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Designing and testing tractors, harvesters and other farm machines; planning drip and sprinkler irrigation and water storage; soil and water conservation; solar pumps and farm energy; designing cold storage, godowns and food-processing units; field visits to farms and plants.
A day in the work
You start at the office or a workshop, checking drawings for a micro-irrigation scheme or a farm-machinery design. By mid-morning you are on a farm or at a site. You may measure land levels, test whether a pump delivers the right flow, or show farmers how a new machine works. After lunch you write estimates and reports, and talk to contractors or suppliers. Some days are mostly outdoors in sun and dust, and some are mostly paperwork.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–11Choose Science with Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Agricultural engineering is an engineering degree, so Maths matters from day one. Start noticing how farms use water, machines and storage.
- Step 2 · Class 12 (Jan–May of the admission year)Apply for CUET (UG) on cuet.nta.nic.in and choose ICAR as an option. Pick Physics, Chemistry and Maths as your test subjects, the same ones you studied in Class 12. In 2026, registration ran from 3 January to 4 February and the exam ran 11–31 May (reported). NTA sets new dates every year. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · After results (June–August)Register for ICAR counselling. Fill your choices of university and programme. Seats are given by merit rank, category and eligibility. ICAR says there is no direct nomination into these degrees without qualifying CUET (ICAR-UG). Also look at your own state agricultural university's separate admission process.
- Step 4 · 4 yearsB.Tech Agricultural Engineering. Expect workshop and field work, machine design, irrigation and drainage, soil and water engineering, and food processing. Many colleges include practical or internship periods (reported).
- Step 5 · After B.Tech (government route): written examState public service commissions advertise posts like Assistant Agriculture Engineer. For example, Odisha's 2026 advertisement had a written exam on 1 November 2026 (reported). Posts are few, and the exam is held only when vacancies are advertised. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Interview and verificationShortlisted candidates give a personality test or interview (25 marks in the Odisha 2026 advertisement). Then come document verification and a medical check (reported). After joining, you are normally on probation under that state's service rules. (reported — check with the official body)
- OptionalM.Tech through ICAR AIEEA (PG), which is still a separate NTA exam. The 2026 PG bulletin lists B.Tech Agricultural Engineering as an eligible base degree for Soil and Water Conservation, Irrigation and Drainage, and Processing and Food Engineering.
Ways in
- ICAR quota through CUET (ICAR-UG)You get an all-India rank, then ICAR counselling. It covers only a share of seats at each agricultural university; the 2026-27 bulletin says 20% of university seats. Some ICAR and central universities fill all their seats this way (reported).
- State agricultural university or state CETMost seats at state agricultural universities are filled by the state's own test or Class 12 merit, often with a domicile rule. Check your state university's admission page (reported).
- Diploma in Agricultural Engineering after Class 10A 3-year diploma qualifies you for Junior Engineer posts. Uttar Pradesh advertised 134 Junior Engineer (Agriculture) posts in 2026 for diploma holders (reported). This is a lower pay level than the degree posts.
Your real chances
ICAR's 2026-27 bulletin lists 6,002 ICAR-quota seats across all 13 four-year programmes, not only agricultural engineering. I could not find official applicant numbers for this course. Government jobs are few: Odisha's 2026 advertisement had 48 Assistant Agriculture Engineer posts (reported).

What people earn
Pay Level 10, Cell 1, ₹44,900 basic plus DA and other allowances (Odisha ORSP Rules, 2017), for Assistant Agriculture Engineer, Class II (Group B), Odisha Public Service Commission Advt 08 of 2026-27 (reported; I could not open the official PDF). Other states pay on their own scales.
Government posts follow a fixed pay scale with regular increments and allowances, while private pay depends on the company, the city and your skills, and tends to grow with experience.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
ICAR's CUET (ICAR-UG) system has seats and rules for EWS, SC/ST and PwD candidates. Reported rules: lower minimum Class 12 marks for reserved categories, and in Odisha's 2026 advertisement 16 of the 48 posts were for women, with SC/ST/PwD candidates exempt from the exam fee and age relaxations. Rules differ by state and university, so read each notice.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Make a simple drip-irrigation model with a plastic bottle, a thin tube and a pot plant. Measure how much water you save compared with pouring from a mug.
- Class 10–12Open NPTEL (free, run by the IITs) and watch the first lectures of one agricultural-engineering course, such as farm machinery or irrigation. Note which parts you enjoyed.Open link ↗
- College or afterVisit your nearest Krishi Vigyan Kendra or agricultural university farm. Ask to see their machines, irrigation and storage set-up, and talk to an engineer there about their work.
Good to know
- The old stand-alone ICAR AIEEA (UG) exam no longer exists. ICAR's 2026-27 bulletin says the ICAR quota is now filled through CUET (ICAR-UG), with admission through ICAR counselling.
- The seat table in the 2026 bulletin shows 2025-26 numbers as guidance only. The final 2026-27 seat numbers come in ICAR's counselling brochure.
- Some government posts accept only a degree in Agricultural Engineering. Odisha's 2026 advertisement said no other degree counts as equivalent, and it also required knowledge of Odia (reported). Check each state's rules, including the language rule.
- If you like machines but are unsure about agriculture, compare with Mechanical or Civil Engineering. If you like food and processing more, look at Food Technology.
