Designs, builds and maintains machines, engines, tools and manufacturing systems.

Physics, Chemistry and Maths needed After Class 12 Private sector

Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Taking things apart and understanding how they work
  • Solving practical problems with numbers and drawings
  • Seeing a machine you designed actually run
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Four years of study, plus exams that are tough and competitive
  • Factory or site work can mean noise, heat, shift timings, and travel
  • Some jobs need frequent transfers, especially in PSUs and plant-based firms
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) from a recognised board. Most colleges ask for a minimum aggregate in those subjects, which varies by college and category. A 3-year engineering diploma can also get you into Year 2 through lateral entry.
First degree
B.Tech or B.E. in Mechanical Engineering, 4 years (8 semesters). Diploma holders can join directly in Year 2 and finish in 3 years.
Entrance exams
JEE Main (conducted by NTA) for NITs and many other colleges. State CETs for state government and state-linked colleges. JEE Advanced is needed for the IITs, after JEE Main.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Designing machine parts and products, running tests and simulations, planning production lines, maintaining plant machinery, and working with suppliers and other engineers. Much of the job is teamwork, drawings on computers, and visits to factories or sites.

A day in the work
A typical morning starts with a check on the production line or a review of drawings for a new part. You might spend time on a computer running stress or heat calculations, then meet a supplier or a technician to fix a machine problem. Afternoons often go on reports, testing, or a short call with the design team. Some days you will be on the shop floor with your boots on, and others you will be at a desk.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–11Build a strong base in Physics and Maths. Choose Science with PCM in Class 11. Learn basic drawing and computer use, as the work relies on both.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Pass Class 12 with PCM. Minimum marks depend on the college and your category, so check the college's own notice early. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · Class 12Appear for JEE Main, which NTA runs in more than one session in a year, or the state CET if you want a state college. Your best score is what counts for most colleges.
  4. Step 4 · 4 yearsStudy B.Tech or B.E. Mechanical Engineering at an AICTE-approved college. Expect a practical or internship semester in industry during the course.
  5. Step 5 · After the degreeStart work in manufacturing, automobile, power, or design firms, or in a PSU if you clear its recruitment test. Many people also take a master's (M.Tech) to specialise.

Ways in

  • RouteJEE Main rank for NITs, IIITs and many government-aided colleges, through JoSAA counselling.
  • RouteState CET for seats in state government and state-quota colleges.
  • RouteMerit or direct admission at many private colleges, which is usually costlier.
  • RouteLateral entry into Year 2 for students with a 3-year engineering diploma.

Total costDepends mostly on the college you choose — compare fee pages.
Good to knowThe page gives no fee for training or a stipend, so this route is not a paid course; hostel and mess costs are extra, and fee figures change yearly.

What people earn

Pay depends a lot on the employer, city, and your skills. Freshers in private firms usually start lower than those with several years of experience, and core manufacturing or PSU roles can differ from IT-heavy firms.

Myth and fact

Myth: Mechanical engineers only work in car or engine factories.
Fact: They work in power plants, aviation, railways, building services, shipbuilding, consumer products, and many other areas. Engines are only one small part of the field.

For girls and students with disabilities

Many colleges allow a relaxation in the minimum marks for SC and ST candidates. NITs waive full tuition for SC, ST and PwD students (reported). No separate physical standard applies to this degree route.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9With a parent's permission, open an old fan, mixer or bicycle and draw how its parts fit together. Make a simple model of a lever or pulley with household items.
  • Class 10–12Enrol free in the NPTEL course Basics of Mechanical Engineering 1. You can watch the lectures for free and only pay if you want an optional certificate exam.Open link ↗
  • College or afterTake the free NPTEL course Engineering Mechanics, which covers forces, beams and friction. Then solve a few of its practice problems each week.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • Mechanical engineering is a broad branch. You can later move into automobile, robotics, aerospace, energy or manufacturing work.
  • Government and PSU jobs often need a valid GATE score or a PSU-specific test. Private jobs look more at your projects and internships.
  • Fee and seat details change every year. Always check the current year's official fee page and admission notice before you decide.
