What the work is like

Giving pilots clear radio instructions for take-off, landing, taxiing and flying between airports. Watching radar and screens. Keeping aircraft safely apart. Working in a team at the control tower, approach unit or area control centre.

A day in the work
You reach the control tower or radar room early and get a briefing on weather, runway work and traffic. Then you take your position and speak to pilots in short, exact phrases while watching screens or the runway. Every few hours you take a break, because the job needs full attention and the roster includes nights and holidays. At the end of your shift you hand over carefully to the next controller.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM). Work on your spoken English as well. Controllers speak English on the radio all day, and a voice test is part of selection.
  2. Step 2 · 3–4 years after Class 12Do a full-time B.Sc. with Physics and Maths, or a B.E./B.Tech in any branch that includes Physics and Maths. You do not need an aviation diploma or a paid ATC course. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · When AAI advertisesApply online at aai.aero. AAI does not advertise ATC posts every year. In 2025 the notice (Advt. 02/2025/CHQ) was for 309 posts, and the maximum age was 27 as on 24 May 2025, with relaxation for some categories (age and fee details reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · Computer Based TestOne online objective test. The 2025 notice says there is no negative marking. It was reported to have 120 questions in 120 minutes, covering English, reasoning, aptitude, general knowledge, and graduate-level Physics and Maths. The syllabus is on aai.aero with each notice. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · Shortlisted candidatesApplication verification (original certificates), voice test, psychoactive substances test, psychological assessment and a physical medical examination. The final merit list is based on the CBT score, but you must pass every one of these stages.
  6. Step 6 · Background check and offerAAI issues offers only after background verification. Selected candidates then train, and are paid basic pay and allowances during training. They sign a ₹7 lakh surety bond to serve AAI for 3 years after training.
  7. Step 7 · Training, rating and postingAAI trains controllers at its own college, such as the Civil Aviation Training College (CATC), Prayagraj. Initial training was reported to run about a year, including simulators and on-the-job training. You must reach ICAO English Level 4, and you earn ratings such as Approach Control before working that position. (reported — check with the official body)

Your real chances

In the 2025 notice, AAI advertised 309 Junior Executive (ATC) posts across UR, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST and PwBD. We could not find an official count of applicants for that round. Competition is clearly tough, because there are few posts and many graduates, and notices do not come every year.

What people earn

Official pay

Junior Executive (Group-B, E-1 level): ₹40,000 – 3% – ₹1,40,000 in the IDA pay scale, as in the 2025 advertisement. CPF, gratuity, social security schemes and medical benefits are given as per AAI rules. This is a PSU scale (IDA), not a 7th CPC pay level.

Pay rises with each year of service and promotions, and allowances change with the city you are posted to. Busy metro airports and senior posts usually mean more responsibility and higher total pay.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must do a pilot course or a paid ATC or aviation diploma to become an air traffic controller.
Fact: For AAI, the notice asks for a B.Sc. with Physics and Maths, or an engineering degree, plus English (qualification details reported). AAI trains selected candidates itself, and its college courses are not open to the general public.

For girls and students with disabilities

Seats are reserved for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer) and EWS candidates. The 2025 notice also set aside 7 posts for one disability category, so check the notice for which disabilities qualify. Age relaxation is reported as 5 years for SC/ST, 3 for OBC-NCL and 10 for PwBD (reported). Women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates were reported to pay no application fee (reported). All candidates, including women, must pass the same voice, psychological and medical checks.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Watch live flight tracking for a few minutes a week. Notice how planes take off and land in order, and read about what a control tower does.Open link ↗
  • Class 10–12Choose PCM and practise speaking English clearly. Read a news item aloud, or join your school debate or elocution club. Voice and clarity are tested later.
  • College or afterTake a free NPTEL or SWAYAM course in physics or maths (for example mechanics or probability). It builds the graduate-level basics the AAI test checks.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • ATC recruitment is not yearly. The 2026 AAI notice (Advt. 12/2026) was reported by exam sites to cover Finance, Law, Operations and Survey posts, with no ATC posts (reported). Watch aai.aero for the next ATC notice.
  • The age limit is 27 for general candidates (as on the notice's cut-off date). So finish your degree on time and do not wait many years before applying.
  • Medical and psychological fitness is checked and can end your selection even after a good CBT score. Read the medical standards in the notice before you plan for this job.
  • AAI's ATC posting can be anywhere in India, including small airports and remote places. Bond and transfer rules apply.
