Electronics and Communication Engineer
Designs circuits, communication systems, mobile networks and electronic devices.

Is this for me?
- Solving puzzles about how circuits and signals behave
- Building and testing real hardware, not only theory
- Seeing your work used in phones, networks, or satellites
- Four years of study followed by more exams or training for many jobs
- Long hours near deadlines, and lab work that can be slow and repetitive
- Maths and physics can feel heavy in the early years, and the field changes fast, so you must keep learning
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths, usually with a minimum aggregate set by the college or exam (reported). Diploma holders in ECE can also enter a B.Tech through lateral entry.
- First degree
- B.Tech or BE in Electronics and Communication Engineering, 4 years. A 3-year lateral-entry B.Tech is open to diploma holders.
- Entrance exams
- JEE Main (NTA) for NITs, IIITs and other central institutes, and state CETs for state colleges. Private colleges may have their own entrance tests.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Designing and testing circuits and chips, building communication and mobile network equipment, writing embedded software, working on satellites, radar and broadcast systems, and maintaining telecom networks. Work is often in offices and labs, with some site visits.
A day in the work
A typical day might start with a team meeting to review the progress of a circuit board or a network test. You may spend the morning on a computer simulating a design, then move to the lab to test a prototype with an oscilloscope and a soldering iron. Some afternoons go to documentation, reports, or calls with a supplier or a client. Deadlines and test failures can make the day longer.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Strong basics in these three subjects matter for both JEE and the B.Tech itself.
- Step 2 · Class 12Appear for JEE Main. It is held in two sessions a year, usually in January and April, and the better score counts. For state colleges, check the state CET instead. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · After Class 12Take part in JoSAA counselling for NITs and IIITs, or the state counselling for state colleges. Pick an ECE seat, and compare fees and placement records before you choose. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · 4 yearsStudy B.Tech ECE. Use the labs, do small projects and take an internship in the second or third year.
- Step 5 · Final year and afterApply for campus placements, or prepare for GATE for public sector jobs and M.Tech. Government recruitment rules change each year, so check the latest notice. (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- B.Tech ECE through JEE MainThe main route. Central institutes such as NITs and IIITs admit through JEE Main and JoSAA counselling.
- B.Tech ECE through state CETState government and some state-run colleges admit through the state's own entrance test and counselling.
- Diploma in ECE, then lateral entryA 3-year diploma can lead to entry into the second year of a B.Tech, which saves one year of study.

What people earn
Starting pay varies a lot by employer, city and skill: a fresher in a small firm usually earns much less than one in a large electronics or telecom company, and pay rises with experience and specialised skills such as chip design or 5G networks.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Reserved seats for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwD candidates apply in NITs and other central institutes through JoSAA, and government fee waivers exist for lower-income families at some NITs. Check the category rules on the official JEE Main and JoSAA notices each year.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Watch a free basic electricity or electronics video series on the Diksha platform, then try a simple circuit with a battery, a bulb and a switch at home with an adult.Open link ↗
- Class 10–12Build a simple LED circuit in Tinkercad, a free online simulator, before you try it on a breadboard. Note what changes when you add a resistor.Open link ↗

Good to know
- Fee and seat details change every year. A NIT's 2026 fee sheet shows an ECE programme total of about ₹6.5 lakh over 4 years before hostel (see sources).
- Many ECE graduates work in software, IT and chip design, not only in hardware or telecom.
- Government jobs for ECE graduates usually come through GATE, the UPSC Engineering Services exam, or the recruitment tests of PSUs, ISRO, DRDO and railways. Each has its own age limit and rules.
