Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Hands-on lab work and seeing an experiment work as planned
  • Problems that need patience, careful notes and repeat tries
  • Work that can help with health, farming or clean energy
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Failed experiments and slow results are normal
  • Deadlines can mean long hours or weekend lab runs
  • Many good jobs need a master's or PhD, which means years more study
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Biology and Chemistry is the usual base for B.Sc Biotechnology. B.Tech Biotechnology usually asks for Physics and Maths as well. Check each college's notice for the exact marks rule.
First degree
B.Sc Biotechnology (3 years) or B.Tech/B.E. Biotechnology (4 years). Then an M.Sc or M.Tech in Biotechnology or an allied subject (about 2 years).
Entrance exams
For the master's: GAT-B for DBT-supported M.Sc/M.Tech programmes, IIT JAM (Biotechnology paper) for IIT M.Sc seats, or GATE Biotechnology for some M.Tech routes. Some universities also run their own entrance tests.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Growing cells or microbes, running DNA and enzyme tests, scaling up small experiments in fermenters, checking quality in labs, and recording results. Work is found in pharma, diagnostics, food, farm research and environmental labs.

A day in the work
A typical day often starts with checking cell cultures or bacterial plates and noting any overnight change. Mid-morning may go to a test such as PCR or an enzyme assay, then recording the numbers in a notebook or software. Afternoons may bring a team meeting, reading research papers, or scaling a small experiment up in a bioreactor. Many days end with cleaning equipment and planning the next run.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Biology and Chemistry, with Physics and Maths if you may later choose B.Tech. Practise lab work in school and keep neat practical records.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12 and afterApply to a B.Sc or B.Tech Biotechnology course. Entry rules differ by college and university, so read each notice and fee page closely.
  3. Step 3 · 3–4 yearsComplete the undergraduate degree. Look for lab projects and an internship, because employers in this field value hands-on work.
  4. Step 4 · Final yearApply for a master's. GAT-B is the test for DBT-supported places. JAM 2027 applications have already closed, and the GAT-B 2027 notice had not been released as of mid-October 2026. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · 2 yearsFinish the M.Sc or M.Tech with a research project. If you want research work, a PhD follows. DBT-JRF fellowships for PhD study are chosen through an annual Biotechnology Eligibility Test.
  6. OptionalDo a PhD, or a short course in bioprocess, clinical research or bioinformatics. Choose by the kind of job you want.

Ways in

  • B.Tech/B.E. Biotechnologymore engineering, process and plant design. Often followed by an M.Tech.
  • B.Sc Biotechnologymore lab work and research basics. Often followed by an M.Sc, and a PhD if you want research or university roles.

Good to knowThe page gives no fee for B.Tech or master's courses, and no pay or licence; the Panjab and Vistas figures are for one college each, so check your own college's fee page.

What people earn

Earnings vary a lot by sector, city and qualification. Entry-level lab roles pay much less than senior research or industry posts, and a master's or PhD often opens the better jobs.

Myth and fact

Myth: You need a PhD before you can get any biotech job.
Fact: Many lab, quality-control and production roles are open to graduates and master's holders. A PhD matters most for research leadership and university posts.

For girls and students with disabilities

GAT-B merit lists are prepared category-wise under government reservation policy. The DBT BioCARe programme supports women scientists returning after a career break, mainly through research grants, so it is not a route for school leavers. The JAM 2027 brochure marks a 5% PwD reservation for one listed programme only.

  • Class 7–9Put a slice of bread in a clean jar, keep the lid closed, and note what grows each day for a week. Compare your notes with a classmate.
  • Class 10–12Enrol free in the NPTEL course Industrial Biotechnology and watch the first two weeks. You do not need to pay for the optional certificate exam.Open link ↗
  • College or afterRead the Biotechnology section of the official JAM 2027 brochure to see what a master's entrance test covers. Note the topics you find hardest and plan your study around them.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • GAT-B 2026 scores were valid only for admission in the 2026-27 academic year. Each intake needs a fresh score.
  • The JAM 2027 brochure lists 115 seats across six programmes at five IITs under the Biotechnology paper. These are not all M.Sc Biotechnology seats, and eligibility differs by programme.
  • Reported: a source says DBT-BET is merging into the Joint CSIR-UGC NET (Life Sciences) from December 2026. Confirm this in the official notice before you plan around it.
  • Biotechnology is broad. Pharma, food, agriculture and bioinformatics all hire, so your choice of master's subject matters.
