Bioinformatics Scientist
Uses programming and data analysis to study DNA, proteins and disease for medicine and research.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Solving puzzles that combine biology with code and maths
- Working with large datasets and finding patterns in them
- Seeing your analysis help real research on disease or medicines
- Years of study before you reach a stable research or senior role
- Long hours of coding and debugging, with results that are often unclear
- Limited jobs in some cities, so you may need to move for a good post
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 in PCB or PCM. Biology and Maths both help. Basic computer skills (coding, Excel, statistics) help a lot. Most routes need a life-science, biotechnology or computing degree at graduation level, usually with at least 50% to 60% marks, though the bar varies by college.
- First degree
- B.Sc (3 years) or B.Tech (4 years) in Biotechnology, Life Sciences or Bioinformatics, then an M.Sc in Bioinformatics (2 years). Many scientists then do a PhD.
- Entrance exams
- For DBT-supported M.Sc and M.Tech biotechnology programmes: GAT-B, conducted by NTA for the Department of Biotechnology. Some universities also use their own entrance test or direct merit. For research fellowships later: DBT's Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) and CSIR-UGC NET (Life Sciences).
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Writing code and pipelines to read and compare DNA and protein sequences. Running analysis on large gene and patient datasets. Working with biologists, doctors and lab teams. Reporting results in papers, reports or drug-discovery projects.
A day in the work
You often start by checking overnight runs of sequence-analysis jobs and fixing any that failed. Much of the morning goes to cleaning data, writing scripts and comparing gene or protein results. Afternoons may bring a meeting with wet-lab biologists or doctors to explain what the data shows. The day usually ends with notes, a draft report, or a plan for the next experiment.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–12Study Biology and Maths well. Pick PCB or PCM in Class 11. Start learning basic programming, such as Python, in your spare time.
- Step 2 · Class 12Finish Class 12 with good marks in the science subjects. Colleges set their own minimum marks for the next degree, so check the college before you choose.
- Step 3 · Graduation (3–4 years)Do a B.Sc in Biotechnology, Life Sciences or Bioinformatics, or a B.Tech in Biotechnology. Learn Linux, R or Python, and databases. Try an internship or a small data project.
- Step 4 · After graduationApply for an M.Sc entrance. GAT-B 2026 was held on 17 May 2026 and its score is valid only for admissions in 2026-27. Some universities also admit through their own tests or merit.
- Step 5 · M.Sc (2 years)Study bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics, statistics and programming. Most courses end with a research project or dissertation. Choose a project that uses real biological data.
- Step 6 · Optional PhD or research fellowshipResearch roles often need a PhD (commonly 3–5 years). Fellowships such as DBT-JRF go through BET. CSIR-UGC NET is another route into research fellowships. (reported — check with the official body)

What people earn
Pay varies a lot. Early-career pay in research grants, fellowships and industry depends on your degree, your skills, the employer, and the city. It rises with a PhD, published work and experience in industry.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
The GAT-B entrance follows Government of India reservation rules. The DBT-JRF eligibility test (BET) gives age relaxation of up to 5 years for SC/ST, women and PwD candidates, and up to 3 years for OBC non-creamy-layer candidates. Mark relaxations vary by university.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Make a simple poster or model of how DNA carries instructions. Show it in a school science fair or class talk.
- Class 10–12Enrol in the free NPTEL course Data Analysis for Biologists and watch the first two weeks. Check that the current session is open. The certificate is optional and paid.Open link ↗

Good to know
- The GAT-B 2026 score is valid only for admissions in the academic year 2026-27. Each year's score has to be earned again.
- Entry rules differ by college. Some ask for 50% in graduation, some ask for 55% to 60%, and some accept any science degree. Check the specific college's notice.
- Many bioinformatics roles mix wet-lab biology and computing. Learning both makes you more useful to research teams.
- Distance-mode M.Sc Bioinformatics is not recognised in India. Check that a course is UGC-approved and regular (on-campus) before you apply.
