CAPF Paramedical Staff (ASI/Head Constable, nurse, lab tech)
Provide medical support, first aid and lab or OT services to paramilitary personnel in camps and hospitals.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Helping people directly, often when they are hurt or unwell
- Wearing a uniform and working in a disciplined team
- A permanent government job with a clear ladder of promotions
- Transfers to far or difficult areas, and time away from family
- Strict fitness and medical standards, plus a physical test to clear
- Few vacancies, with notices that do not come every year
- Class 11–12 subjects
- It depends on the trade. In the last CRPF notice I could confirm (2020), an ASI Lab Technician needed Class 10 with Science plus a diploma or certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology. A Head Constable (Nursing Assistant, ANM, Dialysis Technician) needed Class 12 plus a 2-year diploma or certificate. A Staff Nurse (Sub-Inspector) needed Class 12 plus a 3½-year GNM nursing diploma (reported). Veterinary and some lab trades asked for Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Class 12. Rules change with each notice, so always read the latest one.
- First degree
- Usually a diploma or certificate course of 1–3½ years (for example DMLT, dialysis technology, ANM or GNM). A B.Sc is not needed for most Group C posts, but a few Group B posts such as Dietitian have asked for a degree.
- Entrance exams
- No national exam. Each force runs its own recruitment. For CRPF in 2020 the stages were a physical standard and efficiency test, a written exam, a trade or skill test with document check, and a medical exam. BSF, ITBP, SSB, CISF and Assam Rifles also recruit paramedical staff; check each force's own website.
- Licence or registration
- Nurses need registration with a State or Central Nursing Council (reported from the 2020 notice). Other trades need a recognised diploma or certificate.
What the work is like
Giving first aid and nursing care, running lab tests, X-ray, ECG, dialysis or OT support, and helping doctors in force hospitals, camps and field units. These are "combatised" posts, which means you are a member of the force with a rank, not only a hospital employee.
A day in the work
Your day may start with a morning round at the unit's medical inspection room, checking jawans with fever, injuries or old complaints. A lab technician runs blood and urine tests and writes reports for the medical officer. A nursing assistant dresses wounds, gives injections and keeps stock registers up to date. When the unit moves for an operation or a camp, you pack your kit and go with it. Some weeks are quiet, and others are all emergencies.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–12Study Science, ideally Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Many trades ask for Class 10 with Science, and some ask for PCB in Class 12. Start building running fitness now.
- Step 2 · After Class 10 or 12 · 1 to 3½ yearsDo the diploma or certificate that matches the post you want (MLT, nursing assistant, ANM, GNM, dialysis, physiotherapy assistant and so on). Choose a recognised institute. Nurses must also register with the Nursing Council.
- Step 3 · Watch for the noticeCRPF and other forces publish paramedical notices on their own websites, not every year. The latest CRPF notice I could confirm officially was the 2020 one (789 vacancies, 24 posts). Pick only one post, because the 2020 notice allowed one application. Women and SC/ST candidates paid no fee in 2020. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Physical testsThe Physical Standard Test (height, chest, weight) comes first, then a qualifying Physical Efficiency Test that carries no marks. For constable trades in 2020 it was a 1.6 km run in 10 minutes for men and 12 minutes for women. Other trades had a harder PET (reported).
- Step 5 · Written examIn 2020 this was a 2-hour test of 100 multiple-choice questions. It was set at Class 10 level for constables and Class 12 level for Head Constables, and graduate level for other posts. Merit is drawn trade by trade (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Trade test, documents and medicalA skill test in your own trade, a check of all certificates, and a detailed medical exam under the Home Ministry's CAPF medical guidelines. You can be rejected here if any condition is not met, even after passing the written exam.
- Step 7 · Training and postingSelected candidates join the force, go through training and are posted to a unit, hospital or camp anywhere in India. The details are in the joining letter. The length of training and probation was not in the pages I could open. (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- Class 10 + trade certificateStarts after: Class 10 with Science For posts such as ASI (Laboratory Technician) and Head Constable (Laboratory Assistant, Junior X-ray Assistant). You need a recognised lab or X-ray certificate or diploma (2020 notice).
- Class 12 + 2-year diplomaStarts after: Class 12 For Head Constable (Nursing Assistant or Physiotherapy Assistant, ANM or Midwife, Dialysis Technician) and similar trades (2020 notice).
- Nursing diploma or degreeStarts after: Class 12 For Sub-Inspector (Staff Nurse), a Group B post. It asked for GNM plus Nursing Council registration (reported from the 2020 notice).
Your real chances
The last CRPF paramedical notice I could confirm on an official page (2020) had 789 vacancies across 24 posts, for all of India. I could not find an official count of applicants, so I can't give you the odds. Treat it as a competitive, small-vacancy job.

What people earn
Head Constable posts: Pay Level 4, ₹25,500–81,100 (7th CPC), plus allowances, as written in the CRPF 2020 notice. ASI posts: Pay Level 5, ₹29,200–92,300 (reported). Constable-level posts are lower (reported). Check the latest notice, because posts and levels can change.

Pay is fixed by the post's pay level and rises with promotions and years of service. Allowances depend on where you are posted, and hard or remote postings usually add to them.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Women can apply, and in 2020 female candidates paid no fee and had easier running times in the PET. SC/ST candidates also paid no fee. These are combatised posts with set medical standards, so students with disabilities should read the current notice and the Home Ministry's CAPF medical guidelines before planning for this route.

Good to know
- "Combatised" means these staff belong to the force. They need to meet the Home Ministry's medical fitness standards for CAPFs, and they can be posted to remote or disturbed areas.
- Vacancies, age limits, qualifications and pay change with each notice. In 2020 Head Constable posts were 18–25 years and ASI posts 20–25 years (reported). Always read the current notice on the force's own website.
- Many websites show big "2025" or "2026" vacancy numbers for CRPF paramedical posts. I could not confirm those on an official CRPF page, so please do not rely on them.
- A Class 12 pass with a nursing or lab diploma also keeps hospital jobs open if you miss a CAPF vacancy.
