Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Working with machines and seeing how they show what is happening inside the body
  • Being part of a team that saves lives during urgent procedures
  • Learning steadily, since heart technology keeps changing
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Shifts, night duties and emergency calls are common in hospitals
  • Cath lab work needs calm focus, and it can be stressful when a patient's condition changes suddenly
  • You work under doctors, so your role is supportive rather than independent
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, usually with 45–50% in the aggregate. Some colleges also ask for English. The exact cut-off differs by college and university, so check each one.
First degree
B.Sc Cardiac Care Technology, 3 years of study. Most courses add a training period in a hospital, of about six months to one year depending on the college.
Entrance exams
There is no single national entrance exam for this course. Some colleges use NEET scores or their own entrance test, and others admit students on merit.
Licence or registration
From 2026, allied health professionals in this category must register under the NCAHP framework before they can practise. Registration is handled by the State Council or the Central Register, depending on where you live.

What the work is like

Doing ECG, echo, Holter and stress tests; helping cardiologists in the cath lab during angiography and angioplasty; watching patients' vital signs during procedures; keeping cardiac machines working safely.

A day in the work
A typical day starts with checking the machines and the patient list for the day. You do ECGs, echo scans or stress tests, and you note the readings clearly for the doctor. In a cath lab, you help set up the table, monitor the patient's heart rate and blood pressure, and pass equipment to the cardiologist during the procedure. The day ends with cleaning equipment and writing up reports.

Professional qualificationRun by National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP). You can start after: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Minimum time: About 3 years of study plus the hospital training period, after Class 12.

The full route: exams, training, registration

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Choose the science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Keep your English and your marks steady, because most colleges ask for a minimum of about 45–50% in Class 12.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Apply to B.Sc Cardiac Care Technology colleges. Check each college's entrance requirement: some want NEET, some hold their own test, and some select on Class 12 marks.
  3. Step 3 · Years 1–3Study anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and pathology, then move on to ECG, echocardiography and cath lab work. One university ordinance sets the course at three years, including six months of compulsory training in the sixth semester.
  4. Step 4 · Training periodWork in a hospital cardiac or cath lab under supervision. Many colleges make this a mandatory internship, and the length varies by college. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · After the courseRegister under the NCAHP framework as the rules require, then look for jobs in hospitals, heart centres and diagnostic labs. Many roles start as ECG or echo technician, and cath lab roles often come after some experience.
Recently changed, or still changing
  • Registration under the Registration of Allied and Healthcare Professionals Regulations, 2026 lasts five years. You need 15 hours of continuing professional development a year, or 75 hours in five years, to renew.
  • A renewal application must be made six months before the registration expires. If it is late, the entry can show as inactive.
  • Students must get interim registration from the State Council before they start an internship or training.

What people earn

Pay depends a lot on your qualification, your experience and whether you work in a government hospital, a private chain or a small diagnostic centre. Cath lab roles usually pay more than basic ECG roles, and big-city hospitals often pay more than smaller towns.

Myth and fact

Myth: Cath lab technologists just press buttons while the doctor does the real work.
Fact: The course teaches ECG reading, arrhythmia recognition, emergency life support, and how to use and program pacemakers and other cardiac devices. Skilled technologists are a key part of the cath lab team.

  • Class 7–9Read the chapter on the human heart and blood circulation in your school biology book. Then draw the heart from memory and label its chambers and valves.Open link ↗
  • Class 10–12Join a school first-aid or Red Cross club, or attend a free basic life support session if your school or district offers one. Learn how to check a pulse and use CPR safely.
  • College or afterTake a free NPTEL course on human physiology or biomedical instrumentation. Note how ECG machines measure the heart's electrical signals.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • Some colleges call the same course B.Sc Cardiovascular Technology, and in Kerala it can run for four years including the internship. Read the course name and duration on the college page before you compare.
  • Cardiac care technology is a technologist course, not a medical degree. You cannot become a cardiologist with it. A cardiologist needs an MBBS followed by further medical training.
  • Registration rules are new. Dates for the 2026 regulations are reported differently: one source gives 31 August 2026 as the gazette date, and a PTI report gives 15 September 2026. Confirm the current rules with the NCAHP or your State Council before you apply.
