Any stream — choose the subject you love After a master's Government job

Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Explaining ideas and seeing students understand them
  • Reading deeply and doing research in one subject
  • A campus life with long holidays and time to think
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Many years of study before a permanent post: master's, NET and often a PhD
  • Fewer posts than qualified people, so waiting or contract jobs are common
  • Transfers or postings to small towns in government jobs, and heavy paperwork and marking
Class 11–12 subjects
No fixed Class 12 subjects. You teach the subject you study later, so pick a stream and a degree subject you could happily read about for years: Physics, History, Commerce, Psychology, Economics, Languages and so on.
First degree
A bachelor's degree, then a master's in your subject with at least 55% marks (50% for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD and third-gender candidates in the NET rules). A PhD is the other main route, and it is needed for higher posts.
Entrance exams
UGC NET (held by the National Testing Agency), or a State Eligibility Test (SET/SLET) for your own state. A PhD can replace NET (reported). After that, you apply for posts through state Public Service Commissions, university or college advertisements.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Teaching degree and master's students, setting and checking exams, guiding project and PhD students, doing research and writing papers, and sitting on college committees. Senior teachers also run departments.

A day in the work
You reach campus, take two or three lectures and check a few assignments. Between classes you meet students who are stuck, and sometimes a project or PhD student who wants feedback on a chapter. After lunch there may be a department meeting or exam duty. In the evening or on weekends you read papers, write your own research and prepare tomorrow's class.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Choose a stream and subjects you really enjoy. Every stream can lead here. What matters is that you can later study the same subject at master's level. Build reading, writing and explaining habits early.
  2. Step 2 · 3 or 4 yearsDo a bachelor's degree in your subject. Watch one rule: UGC NET qualifiers who have only a 4-year bachelor's degree are not eligible to be appointed Assistant Professor. They are eligible for JRF or PhD admission only. You need a master's (or a PhD) for the teaching post.
  3. Step 3 · About 2 yearsDo a master's in the same or a closely related subject with at least 55% (50% for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD and third-gender candidates). You can apply for NET while you are in your final year, but you only become eligible once the result comes with the required marks.
  4. Step 4 · Exam, twice a yearTake UGC NET (computer-based, a general teaching and research paper plus a subject paper). The NTA bulletin says only about the top 6% of candidates who appear are declared eligible for Assistant Professor. The December 2026 exam is on 14–19 December 2026. Applications were due by 31 October (the date was extended, reported). Most candidates try again in the next session. A SET only counts inside the state where you passed it.
  5. Step 5 · Optional but important · 3–5+ yearsDo a PhD. Under the 2018 rules and the 2025 draft, a PhD holder does not need NET (reported). The draft makes a PhD compulsory for promotion beyond the early stages. Many people do a PhD with a JRF fellowship, which NET also gives to top scorers. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · RecruitmentApply when a university, state Public Service Commission or college advertises posts. In government and aided institutions, a selection committee shortlists and interviews candidates. The draft UGC rules put the Vice-Chancellor in charge of this committee for universities. Posts and rules differ by state and by institution. Private colleges hire directly, with their own pay.
  7. Step 7 · CareerYou start as Assistant Professor and can move up to Associate Professor and Professor under UGC's promotion scheme. Promotion needs years of service, a PhD and research work. The draft rules ask for 10 years of teaching or research and a set number of publications for Professor (draft, reported). (reported — check with the official body)

Ways in

  • NET / SET routeMaster's with 55% (50% for reserved categories), then clear UGC NET, or SET in your state. This is the most common route for arts, commerce, science and language subjects.
  • PhD routeMaster's with 55%, then a PhD that follows UGC's rules. This gives exemption from NET (reported). The 2025 draft also proposes a PhD route for people with a 4-year bachelor's degree with 75% marks. It was still a draft when we checked, so confirm the final rules.
  • Engineering and technologyThe 2025 draft says an M.E./M.Tech with 55% can be enough for Assistant Professor in engineering colleges without NET, matching AICTE norms (draft, reported).
  • Music, dance, art and similar subjectsThe 2025 draft allows a degree with professional achievement in these fields, but this is a draft rule (reported). Check the final UGC rules and the advertisement.

Your real chances

In UGC NET June 2026 (reported from NTA's press release), about 6.07 lakh candidates appeared in 84 subjects. Of them, 4,241 qualified for JRF and Assistant Professor, and 45,904 for Assistant Professor and PhD admission. Another 1.2 lakh appeared in a re-exam for English, Commerce and Sociology, and 824 got JRF with 11,610 eligible for Assistant Professor. Overall, roughly 1 in 12 test-takers became eligible for Assistant Professor. Qualifying is only the first step, because actual teaching posts depend on vacancies in each university or state.

What people earn

Official pay

Assistant Professor starts at Academic Level 10 of the UGC pay matrix (7th CPC). The entry basic pay is about ₹57,700 a month, plus DA, HRA and other allowances (reported; we could not open an official pay table). A PhD at entry can add advance increments (reported). State governments may follow their own scales.

Government and central university posts follow a fixed pay scale that rises with promotions, while private colleges vary a lot by institution, city and subject, and early years on contract can be low.

Myth and fact

Myth: Clearing UGC NET means you will get a professor's job.
Fact: NET only makes you eligible for the Assistant Professor post. It is not a recruitment exam with fixed vacancies. You still have to apply when posts are advertised and be selected by the university, college or state commission.

For girls and students with disabilities

UGC NET asks for 50% marks instead of 55% for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD and third-gender candidates, and third-gender candidates get the same fee, age and eligibility relaxations as SC/ST/PwD. For Assistant Professor eligibility there is no upper age limit. Reservation rules are applied in the NET result and in teaching recruitment, but details differ by state and institution.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Pick one chapter you like. Explain it aloud to a younger child or a friend, then ask them to repeat it back. Notice which parts you struggled to explain, and read more about those.

Good to know

  • UGC released new draft rules for teacher qualifications in January 2025. We could not confirm from an official page that they have been finalised. Always read the qualification line in the actual job advertisement.
  • NET only makes you eligible. It does not give you a job. The NTA bulletin says that candidates who qualify are governed by the recruitment rules of each university, college or state government.
  • The NTA bulletin says UGC NET for Assistant Professor has no upper age limit. The age limit of 30 applies only to JRF, with relaxations.
  • Teachers at government colleges and universities are paid on UGC scales. Private colleges set their own pay, which can be much lower or higher.
