Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Asking 'why' and chasing an answer nobody knows yet
  • Working on one deep problem for months, with freedom to choose ideas
  • Being around curious people and sharing discoveries through papers and talks
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Many years of study: about 4–5 years for the degree, then a PhD and often a postdoc before a stable job
  • Experiments often fail, and results and permanent posts are uncertain
  • Permanent research posts are few, and you may have to move cities or countries for work
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 science with at least three of Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology, and at least 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PwD) for the IISER route. IISc's BS (Research) needs Physics, Chemistry and Maths all three, with 60% (a pass for SC/ST).
First degree
5-year BS-MS (IISER, NISER, UM-DAE CEBS) or 4-year BS (Research) at IISc, or a regular BSc plus MSc. Then a PhD, which usually takes about 5 years. Most permanent research posts expect a PhD.
Entrance exams
IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) for IISERs, also used by IISc's BS (Research). IISc also accepts JEE Advanced. NEST for NISER and UM-DAE CEBS (reported). For the PhD: CSIR-UGC NET, GATE, or the institute's own entrance test and interview.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Asking a question nobody has answered yet, then designing experiments, calculations or fieldwork to test it. Reading papers, analysing data, writing up results, presenting at conferences, guiding younger students and applying for research funds.

A day in the work
You reach the lab or department around 9:30 and check the experiment or simulation that ran overnight. Then you spend hours at the bench, the computer or the blackboard, often finding it didn't work and trying a new idea. After lunch you read a new paper or meet your guide to discuss results. Evenings might go into a group seminar, writing a paper or helping a junior student. Some days are slow, and a small result can feel like a big win.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–11Build strong basics in Maths and Science. Choose a Class 11 combination with at least three of Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology. PCM or PCB both work for IISER. Try Olympiads, science projects and curiosity reading.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12 (entrance exam)Take the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT). In 2026 the application ran from 5 March to 13 April and the computer-based test was on 7 June. You need at least 60% in Class 12 (55% for SC/ST/PwD). IISc's BS (Research) takes students through IAT or JEE Advanced. NISER and UM-DAE CEBS use a separate test called NEST (reported). Dates change every year, so check the current brochure.
  3. Step 3 · 4–5 yearsBS-MS or BS (Research). You study several sciences first, then pick a subject. You do research internships and a year-long MS project. The other way in is a regular BSc and MSc at a university.
  4. Step 4 · PhD, about 5 yearsApply for a PhD in a lab or institute you like. Many students use a CSIR-UGC NET JRF or GATE score, and some institutes also run their own tests and interviews. NET JRF has an age limit of about 28 years, with relaxations (reported). A fellowship is paid during the PhD, so it is not a fees-heavy stage. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · Postdoc, usually a few yearsMost researchers do one or more postdoctoral positions in India or abroad. They publish papers and build their own research ideas. This stage is short-term and can be uncertain. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · Permanent postApply when institutes advertise posts. These include research institutes (such as CSIR labs, TIFR, IISERs and IISc), universities and government labs. Hiring is by advertisement, interview and a research talk, and the number of posts is small.

Ways in

  • Integrated science institutes (IISER / IISc / NISER / CEBS)Take IAT (IISER, IISc), JEE Advanced (IISc) or NEST (NISER, CEBS) after Class 12. You get early research exposure, then a PhD.
  • Regular university routeDo BSc and MSc at a good university or college, then clear CSIR-UGC NET or GATE (or a university test) for a funded PhD. Many working scientists came this way.

Your real chances

In 2026, the IISER brochure listed 2,043 BS-MS seats across the seven IISER campuses, plus about 300 more seats in other programmes including supernumerary seats (a tentative total of 2,343). Seats are few compared with the number of students who attempt the test. I could not find an official applicant number.

Total timeAbout 10–11 years after Class 12 to a permanent post (5-year BS-MS plus about 5-year PhD, then postdoc)
Total costGovernment institutes charge tuition plus semester fees (IISER Bhopal: ₹40,400 + ₹3,200 per semester), and the PhD is fellowship-funded, so the main cost is the exam and college fees.
Good to knowNever pay anyone to guarantee a seat; apply only through official admission websites, and check the current year's brochure for fees and dates.

What people earn

Official pay

There is no single pay scale. A permanent scientist's pay follows the 7th CPC pay level given in each institute's own job advertisement, so check the latest advertisement. During the PhD you get a fellowship, not a salary. The official DST portal lists CSIR-UGC NET JRF/SRF for 5 years or until the PhD is done. It shows older amounts, and the current JRF/SRF rates of about ₹37,000 and ₹42,000 a month plus HRA are (reported).

Early years bring a modest fellowship or a short-term postdoc stipend, and pay rises when you get a permanent post, with the amount depending on the institute, whether it is government or private, and the city.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must get into an IISER or IISc to become a scientist.
Fact: These institutes are one good route, but not the only one. Many researchers do a regular BSc and MSc, clear CSIR-UGC NET or GATE, and then do a funded PhD.

For girls and students with disabilities

For IAT 2026, the minimum Class 12 marks are 55% for SC/ST/PwD (60% otherwise), and PwD candidates with at least 40% disability get one hour of extra time. IISc keeps extra supernumerary seats for women in its BS (Research) programme (reported).

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Pick one question you're curious about, like why plants lean toward light, and test it with a simple home experiment. Write down what you did and what you found. You can also look at the free Olympiad information from HBCSE.Open link ↗
  • Class 10–12Read the syllabus section of the official IAT brochure and try solving a few NCERT-level questions in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology. Notice which subject you enjoy even when the questions get hard.Open link ↗
  • College or afterTake a free NPTEL or SWAYAM course in your subject. Then write to a professor about a short summer research project.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • Old guides mention KVPY. For 2026 the IISER brochure says all IISER admissions are only through IAT, so check the current year's brochure.
  • IISERs share one aptitude test and counselling system. In 2026, IAT scores were also used by IISc (BS Research), IIT Madras (BS) and IIT Guwahati (BS in Biomedical Science and Engineering).
  • Basic research jobs are few and competitive. Many PhDs also work in teaching, data science, industry R&D, patents or science writing.
  • Never pay anyone to 'guarantee' an IISER or IISc seat. Apply only through the official admission websites.
