Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Solving puzzles where messy data has to become clean and reliable
  • Building systems that many other people depend on every day
  • Seeing how one piece of data flows from a source to a final report
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Late-night fixes when a live pipeline fails and reports are due
  • Keeping up with new tools and cloud platforms, which change often
  • Much of the work is behind the scenes, so less visible than front-facing roles
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 in any stream, with Maths and Computer Science helpful. Most B.Tech and BCA colleges expect Maths in Class 12, so check each college's rules. Physics and Chemistry matter for B.Tech in general, not for the job itself.
First degree
B.Tech or BCA, then MCA or a master's in data engineering or data science if you want it. Most people in this work come from computer science, IT or a related branch. A diploma in computer science and a short professional course can also start a path, but the job market is competitive.
Entrance exams
There is no single national exam for this job. B.Tech admission usually goes through JEE Main or a state entrance test. BCA and MCA admission goes through university or college rules.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Building data pipelines that collect data from apps, payments and business systems, clean it and load it into warehouses or data lakes. Writing SQL and Python code, using tools such as Spark, Kafka and Airflow, and setting up cloud storage. Checking that the data arrives on time and is correct, and working with data scientists and analysts who use it.

A day in the work
A typical morning starts with checking the overnight data jobs for failures or delays. Much of the day goes into writing SQL or Python code, fixing a pipeline that broke, or adding a new data source. You will also spend time in meetings with analysts or data scientists, who explain what data they need and in what format. The day usually ends with testing changes so that tomorrow's reports run correctly.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–10Build strong Maths and logic skills. Try a small Python or spreadsheet project, such as tracking your own expenses, to see how data is stored and cleaned.
  2. Step 2 · Class 11–12Choose Maths and, if your school offers it, Computer Science. Learn basic SQL and Python in your own time. Plan for B.Tech or BCA entrance tests in Class 12 (JEE Main or state tests for B.Tech; university rules for BCA). (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · 3–4 years after Class 12Study B.Tech or BCA in computer science, IT or data science. Practise databases, distributed systems, Spark and at least one cloud platform (Azure, AWS or Google Cloud) in your coursework and projects. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · Final yearBuild one or two working projects, such as a pipeline that pulls public data, cleans it and stores it in a database. Put the code on a public site so employers can see it. Apply for internships in IT services, product companies or analytics firms.
  5. Step 5 · First jobStart as a junior or associate data engineer, usually in a services firm, a product company or a bank's technology team. Learn on the job, and add cloud or Spark certifications later if your employer supports them. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Optional · After work experience or after the degreeA master's such as M.Tech in Data Engineering or a PG programme. NIELIT, a government body under MeitY, offers an M.Tech in Data Engineering and a PG Programme in Data Engineering.

What people earn

Entry-level pay is modest and rises with experience. Product companies and large tech hubs usually pay more than IT services firms or smaller cities, and skills in cloud and big-data tools can speed up the rise.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must be a maths genius or a coding prodigy to become a data engineer.
Fact: Solid Maths, logic and step-by-step coding are what matter most. Most people learn SQL, Python and cloud tools during college and on the job, with steady practice.

Good to know

  • The job has no government recruitment. Pay, hiring and promotion depend on the employer, so compare offers by the work you will do, not only by the headline number.
  • NIELIT's PG Programme in Data Engineering is a 7-month, 840-hour course, with a 2026 registration date that has already passed. Check its current batch notice before you apply.
  • Good free starting points include NPTEL's Data Science for Engineers course, where the certificate exam is optional and paid, and NIELIT's short courses. The course content itself is free to read.
