Software Developer
Writes, tests and maintains software for apps, websites and business systems.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Solving puzzles and seeing logic turn into a working app
- Learning new tools, since the field keeps changing
- Building something people use every day
- Long debugging sessions where the problem is hard to find
- Deadlines and pressure before a release, sometimes with late nights
- Years of self-study needed to stay current, even after the degree
- Class 11–12 subjects
- For B.Tech Computer Science, you usually need Class 12 with Physics and Maths, plus 60% or more in most colleges (reported; check each college). For BCA, Class 12 in any stream is often enough, with about 50% marks in many colleges (reported). Coding skill matters more than the stream once you are hired.
- First degree
- B.Tech in Computer Science (4 years) or BCA (3 years). Many people also learn through projects and online courses.
- Entrance exams
- For B.Tech at NITs and many state colleges, JEE Main (NTA) is the common entrance test (reported). BCA admissions use university tests or merit lists, and they vary by college.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Writing code for apps, websites and office systems such as billing, school or hospital software; testing and fixing bugs; updating old software; working with designers, testers and clients; reading and writing documentation.
A day in the work
Most developers start the day with a team stand-up, where they say what they did yesterday and what they will do today. The rest of the day goes to writing code, fixing a bug a tester found, or reviewing a colleague's code. Some afternoons go to meetings with clients or a product manager. Many days end with a small thing working for the first time, which is the part people often enjoy most.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 9–10Get comfortable with maths and logical thinking. Try a free beginner coding activity, and ask your school if there is a computer or coding club.
- Step 2 · Class 11–12Pick Physics and Maths if you want B.Tech. Learn one language well, such as Python, and build small projects like a quiz app or a simple website. Keep a record of what you build. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · Class 12Apply for B.Tech Computer Science through JEE Main and counselling, or for BCA through the college's test or merit list. Check each college's eligibility on its own official site before applying. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · 3–4 yearsStudy programming, data structures, databases and web technology. Do at least one real project and one internship if you can get it. Projects on GitHub often matter as much as marks in hiring.
- Step 5 · Final yearApply for jobs or internships. Most companies test coding skill in an online test and a technical interview. Expect to solve problems live.
- OptionalDo an MCA, M.Tech or a specialist course in AI, cloud or cybersecurity after a few years of work, if you want to move into research or senior roles.
Ways in
- B.Tech Computer ScienceFour years after Class 12 with Physics and Maths. Usually the strongest path into product companies and big IT firms.
- BCAThree years after Class 12 in any stream. Good for beginners, and many graduates later take an MCA.
- Self-learning with projectsLearn from free courses and build a portfolio. Hiring is possible without a degree, but it takes more discipline and luck, and many companies still ask for a degree.

What people earn
Pay depends a lot on your skill, your employer and your city. Freshers at service companies usually earn less than freshers at product companies, and pay grows fast with experience and strong projects.
Myth and fact
Try it now
- Class 7–9Spend one month on a simple block-coding or logic-puzzle activity, and ask your school whether it has a coding or robotics club.
- Class 10–12Enrol in the free NPTEL course The Joy of Computing using Python and do the weekly exercises. You only pay if you want the proctored certificate exam.Open link ↗
- College or afterPick one free course on Skill India Digital Hub in coding or web development and finish it. Then build a small project to show what you learned.Open link ↗
Good to know
- No government licence is needed. Your skills and your projects are what employers check.
- NIT fees are much lower than many private colleges. Compare total cost, not only tuition.
- Good coding habits and maths help at every stage. Start small and build steadily.
