Epidemiologist
Studies how diseases spread and investigates outbreaks to guide prevention policies, often with ICMR, NCDC or WHO.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Solving puzzles with data and real-life clues
- Work that protects many people at once
- A mix of field visits, talking to people and desk analysis
- Many years of study; the doctor route is long, with MBBS, then MD
- Sudden travel and long hours during outbreaks
- Many jobs are contractual, and senior posts often prefer doctors, so plan ahead
- Class 11–12 subjects
- There is no single Class 12 stream. For the doctor route (MBBS), you need Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Class 12. For the public-health route, many institutes accept a bachelor's degree in life sciences, nursing, pharmacy, BDS/AYUSH, statistics or even engineering. Eligibility changes by institute, so read each prospectus. Comfort with Maths, Statistics and computers helps in both routes.
- First degree
- Doctor route: MBBS, then MD Community Medicine (3 years). Non-doctor route: any relevant bachelor's degree, then MPH or M.Sc (Epidemiology / Biostatistics), about 2 years. Doctors can add field training such as the India Epidemic Intelligence Service (2 years).
- Entrance exams
- NEET-UG for MBBS. NEET-PG or INI-CET for MD Community Medicine (reported). Each institute runs its own MPH entrance. For example, AIIMS Rishikesh uses an entrance exam plus an interview. ICMR-NIE selects M.Sc Biostatistics students by written test and interview.
- Licence or registration
- No licence is needed to use the title "epidemiologist". Doctors must hold medical registration (NMC or a State Medical Council) to work as doctors and to join MD courses.
What the work is like
Investigating disease outbreaks; collecting and analysing surveillance data; designing surveys and studies; writing reports that help governments decide on vaccination, water, sanitation and screening programmes; training health staff.
A day in the work
Your morning might start by checking the day's disease reports from districts and spotting a sudden rise in fever cases in one block. You call the local health officer, then travel to the village to talk to families, note when people fell ill and collect water and food samples with the lab team. Back at the desk in the evening, you put the cases into a spreadsheet, draw a graph and look for what the sick people have in common. Then you write a short report that tells the district what to do next, such as chlorinate wells or run a vaccination drive.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 9–12Build a base in Biology, Maths and basic statistics. Get used to reading graphs and tables. Take PCB if you want MBBS. Other subject choices still lead to public health through a bachelor's degree and an MPH.
- Step 2 · Class 12 and afterDoctor route: NEET-UG, then MBBS (about 4.5 years plus a 1-year internship). Non-doctor route: a bachelor's degree in life sciences, nursing, pharmacy, BDS/AYUSH, statistics or a related subject. Check the exact eligibility of each MPH or M.Sc you want.
- Step 3 · 2–3 yearsPostgraduate study. MBBS doctors can take MD Community Medicine (3 years, through NEET-PG or INI-CET). Others can take an MPH or M.Sc in Epidemiology or Biostatistics (2 years). AIIMS Rishikesh's MPH is a full-time 2-year course. Entry is by an entrance exam and an interview, and you need at least 50% in the two stages combined (2026 prospectus). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · 1–3 yearsField experience. The India Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) at NCDC is a 2-year, on-the-job training in outbreak response. Its 2024 flyer lists the entry routes: MD in community medicine or public health, or other MD/MBBS plus years of experience. The age limit is 45. ICMR-NIE's MPH (Epidemiology and Health Systems) asks for MBBS plus 3 years of public health work.
- Step 5 · JobsApply for posts such as district or state epidemiologist under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and National Health Mission, NCDC or ICMR institutes, and WHO or NGO projects. Many posts are contractual, and states set their own qualifications and pay. (reported — check with the official body)
- OptionalPhD in epidemiology or public health for research and teaching careers, for example at ICMR institutes or medical colleges.
Ways in
- Doctor routeClass 12 (PCB) → NEET-UG → MBBS → MD Community Medicine → India EIS or a government public-health post
- Public-health route (non-doctor)Bachelor's degree (life sciences, nursing, pharmacy, BDS/AYUSH, etc.) → MPH or M.Sc Epidemiology → district or state epidemiologist and research roles. NCDC's 2026 contract notice accepts a life-science B.Sc plus MPH, DPH or MAE and 2 years' experience for some public-health posts (reported).
- Numbers routeBachelor's with Statistics or Maths → M.Sc Biostatistics (for example at ICMR-NIE, Chennai) → biostatistician or data roles on disease studies
Your real chances
No official applicant count was found for this career. The AIIMS Rishikesh MPH prospectus for the January 2026 session lists only 8 seats for medical graduates, so places in top public-health courses are few. NCDC's October 2026 contract notice reportedly offers 4 Medical Epidemiologist posts among 30 vacancies (reported).

What people earn
Most epidemiologist posts at NCDC and under IDSP are contractual with consolidated pay, not a pay level. NCDC's terms of reference for consultant epidemiologists list ₹90,000 a month for up to 3 years' experience, ₹1,20,000 for over 3 and under 10 years, and ₹1,50,000 for 10 years or more. The page does not show the year. NCDC's October 2026 contract notice lists Medical Epidemiologist at ₹1,20,000 a month for one year, with 4 posts (reported, not read on the official PDF). Regular ICMR scientist posts use pay levels, for example Scientist-B at Level 10, ₹56,100–1,77,500 (reported, October 2026 notice). State NHM district posts pay less and differ by state.

Pay depends a lot on the employer: contract posts under state health missions usually pay less than central institutes, international agencies or research jobs, and it rises with experience, a doctor's qualification and seniority.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
The AIIMS Rishikesh MPH prospectus (2026) reserves seats for SC, ST, OBC and EWS candidates, and PwD candidates pay no application fee. Selected students must be declared medically fit by the institute's medical board, so students with disabilities should check this with the institute.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Do a tiny survey of 15–20 classmates or neighbours (for example, how many had a cold or fever last month). Tally the answers and draw a bar chart. This is the basic habit of epidemiology.
- Class 10–12Start a free beginner course in statistics or data handling on SWAYAM or NPTEL, and practise reading health graphs.Open link ↗
- College or afterRead NCDC's pages on the India EIS programme and its internship programme. Note what each asks for, and start learning Excel or a free tool like R.Open link ↗
Good to know
- Epidemiology is usually a postgraduate field. Most people start with a first degree and specialise afterwards.
- The India EIS is training, not a degree on its own. NCDC says EIS officers can also earn a Master in Applied Epidemiology degree from HNB Medical Education University, Uttarakhand.
- Many senior government epidemiologist posts prefer doctors with MD Community Medicine. Non-doctors with an MPH or M.Sc do get district-level posts, so check each notification (reported).
- Field work often needs the local language. AIIMS Rishikesh's own prospectus says Hindi up to Class 10 is desirable because its MPH involves a lot of field work.
