Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Working on problems that affect thousands of people, not one patient at a time
  • Mixing numbers and data with fieldwork and talking to people
  • A career that links health, society and policy
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Long study: a bachelor's degree plus a 2-year MPH before most jobs
  • Early jobs are often contract-based, with an uncertain future and transfers between districts
  • Fieldwork can mean travel to remote places and slow, patient change
Class 11–12 subjects
There is no fixed Class 12 subject. You first need a bachelor's degree, and the MPH comes after it. Health degrees (MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy) usually need Biology (PCB) in Class 12. Degrees in life science, statistics, economics, sociology, social work, management, psychology or law can lead to an MPH too. NIHFW asks for at least 50% in the bachelor's degree.
First degree
MPH (Master of Public Health), 2 years full-time, after a bachelor's degree. It includes an internship or field practicum and a dissertation.
Entrance exams
There is no single national exam. Each MPH institute sets its own route. AIIMS Rishikesh holds its own written test and interview. NIHFW (Delhi University) admits through CUET (PG). Other colleges, such as TISS, have their own process; check each college's notice.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Planning and running health programmes such as immunisation, nutrition, maternal and child health and disease control. Collecting and studying health data, visiting districts and health centres, training health workers, writing reports and proposals, and checking whether a programme is working.

A day in the work
Meera starts at a district health office by checking last week's vaccination numbers from the health centres. She spots two blocks where children are being missed and phones the medical officers there. Late morning, she drives to a village health centre to meet ASHA workers and hear why some families are not coming. After lunch she writes a short report for the district officer and plans next month's training.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–12Any stream can lead here. Build a good base in English, Biology, Maths and social science. Get used to reading numbers, charts and news about health. Biology (PCB) keeps the doctor, dentist and nursing doors open.
  2. Step 2 · After Class 12 · 3 to 5½ yearsComplete a bachelor's degree. NIHFW lists these as eligible: medicine, AYUSH, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, veterinary science, physiotherapy, nutrition, life sciences, statistics, management, engineering, sociology, psychology, social work, economics and law. Aim for at least 50% marks, because that is the minimum NIHFW asks.
  3. Step 3 · Final year of degreeApply for an MPH. AIIMS Rishikesh runs a 200-question written test (180 minutes), then an interview of 100 marks, but its MPH seats are only for MBBS, BDS and AYUSH graduates. NIHFW, Delhi, takes its merit from CUET (PG) scores and its intake was 20 seats in its 2024 prospectus. Dates change every year, so check each institute's own website. AIIMS Rishikesh's January 2027 registration is reported to close on 10 November 2026. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · 2 yearsMPH coursework in areas like epidemiology, biostatistics, health systems and policy. TISS describes its MPH as four semesters with an internship, an 18-week field practicum and a dissertation. NIHFW needs 15 core modules plus five electives, and a medical fitness check at joining.
  5. Step 5 · First jobMost entry posts are on contract, for example Public Health Manager or Program Manager under the National Health Mission (NHM) in a state or district, or posts with NGOs, research institutes and agencies such as WHO or UNICEF. Many notices ask for 1–3 years of health-programme experience on top of the MPH. Each state or employer hires separately, so there is no common exam (reported from state NHM notices). (reported — check with the official body)
  6. OptionalDoctors can do MD Community Medicine. Others can do a PhD, or a PG Diploma in Public Health Management at NIHFW, which is mainly for in-service government health staff.

Ways in

  • Health-degree routeMBBS, BDS, AYUSH, nursing, physiotherapy or pharmacy, then MPH. This works for every MPH college, including AIIMS Rishikesh. Medical graduates also get preference in some NHM posts and in sponsored seats.
  • Non-health routeA bachelor's in life science, statistics, economics, sociology, social work, management or similar, then MPH at an institute that accepts it, such as NIHFW or TISS. Check each college's eligibility, because some take only medical graduates.
  • In-service routeGovernment health staff can get sponsored MPH seats, such as the in-service seats at AIIMS Rishikesh, or join NIHFW's PG Diploma in Public Health Management on nomination.

Your real chances

Seats in good government MPH programmes are few. AIIMS Rishikesh's January 2026 prospectus lists 10 seats in total (8 open and 2 for in-service candidates), and NIHFW's 2024 prospectus lists an intake of 20. I did not find official applicant numbers.

What people earn

Official pay

There is no single government pay scale for this career. Many NHM posts are contractual with a fixed monthly amount, which varies by state. For example, NIHFW's Training Consultant post, which accepts an MPH with 1 year of experience as one qualification route, was advertised at ₹80,000 a month, consolidated. State NHM posts for Public Health Manager or Program Manager have been reported at roughly ₹20,000–45,000 a month, depending on the state and post (reported, from job listings, not an official page).

Early contract posts in states and NGOs often pay modestly, while experienced people in research institutes, national bodies and international agencies earn much more, and pay also depends on the city and employer.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must be a doctor to work in public health.
Fact: Doctors are welcome, but NIHFW's MPH also accepts graduates of life sciences, statistics, sociology, social work, economics, management, law and engineering. Programmes need people who can handle data, money, communities and policy as well as medicine.

For girls and students with disabilities

AIIMS Rishikesh's MPH seat list includes SC, ST, OBC and EWS seats, and its prospectus has criteria for persons with benchmark disability. NIHFW says reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PH/EWS follows university rules. Age relaxation for women and reserved categories in state NHM jobs (about 5 years in one MP notice) is reported, not confirmed from the official page.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Run a small survey of 20 neighbours or classmates on one health habit, such as handwashing, sleep or water drinking. Count the answers and make a simple chart. This is how public health starts.
  • Class 10–12Look for a local health camp, cleanliness drive or awareness event and volunteer, for example through MY Bharat (for ages 15+). Notice how organisers plan and count people.Open link ↗
  • College or afterTake a free SWAYAM course in statistics, epidemiology or health, and practise reading a state or national health report.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • No licence or council registration is needed to work in public health. Doctors, dentists and nurses still keep their own council registrations.
  • Check eligibility college by college. AIIMS Rishikesh's MPH is only for MBBS, BDS and AYUSH graduates, and it says some Hindi is desirable because of the fieldwork. NIHFW's list is much wider.
  • Many first jobs are contract posts with no permanent post attached. The state and district decide the pay and conditions (reported).
  • Interested in the data side? Look at epidemiologist and data analyst. Prefer working with communities? Look at social work and NGO programme management.
