Decides which shares and bonds a fund buys and sells to grow investors' money.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Reading company accounts and spotting what the numbers do not show
- Making a call under uncertainty and owning the result
- Following markets closely and explaining a decision clearly
- Results are judged over several years, so a bad quarter can look like a failure
- Long hours around results days and sharp market swings, with real pressure to perform
- Years of study and exams before a senior role, and many years in junior jobs first
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 in any stream. Commerce (with Accountancy and Economics) or Maths is the most common base, but there is no fixed subject rule. A bachelor's degree is needed before the senior routes.
- First degree
- A bachelor's degree in any subject, though B.Com, BBA, Economics or a maths-heavy degree are common starting points. Then an MBA in Finance, a two-year PGDM, or the CFA Program. Some people also join the NISM post-graduate programme in securities markets.
- Entrance exams
- CFA Program (three levels, taken one by one, for those who choose it). NISM-Series-XXI-B Portfolio Managers Certification for people in a SEBI-registered portfolio management firm who make investment decisions or act as principal officer.
- Licence or registration
- A mutual fund manager works inside a regulated asset management company, so there is no personal licence for that job. Running a portfolio management service needs SEBI registration of the firm, and its principal officer needs the NISM certificate. Passing an exam alone does not let anyone manage client money.
What the work is like
Choosing which shares and bonds a scheme holds, when to buy or sell, and how much risk to take. Reading company results and economic data, presenting views to the investment team, and making sure the scheme follows its stated objectives and SEBI rules.
A day in the work
Before the market opens, you go through overnight news, the fund's holdings and any company results released the day before. Through the day you discuss buy and sell ideas with the research team and decide what changes to make within the scheme's rules. You also check cash flows into and out of the fund and make sure it stays within its stated limits. The day usually ends with notes for the investment committee and questions from the risk and compliance teams.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Choose Commerce or Science with Maths. Start reading business news and the summaries in company annual reports. This habit matters more than any single subject.
- Step 2 · After Class 12Take a three-year bachelor's degree such as B.Com, BBA, Economics or a similar course. Pick finance electives where your college offers them.
- Step 3 · Post-graduationDo an MBA in Finance or a PGDM from a recognised institute. The NISM Post Graduate Programme in the Securities Market is another route. Check each college's fee page before you apply. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · First 3–5 yearsWork as a research analyst, dealer or assistant fund manager at a mutual fund house or broker. Many fund managers spend several years in junior research roles before they get decision-making power. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Optional, alongside workThe CFA Program is a self-study route with three levels. Many people take it while working. It is not a legal requirement for an ordinary fund manager job.
- Step 6 · Senior roleIf you handle decisions in a SEBI-registered portfolio management firm, you need the NISM-Series-XXI-B certificate. It must be renewed every three years through a continuing education programme.
Ways in
- Mutual fund house (AMC)Join as a research analyst or dealer and move up to fund manager over time. SEBI requires each fund's key personnel, including fund managers, to be named to the trustees with their qualifications and market experience.
- Portfolio management firm (PMS)Work for a SEBI-registered firm that manages individual clients' money. The principal officer and fund decision-makers need the NISM-Series-XXI-B certificate, and the firm must meet SEBI's net-worth and experience rules.

What people earn
Pay varies a great deal: a junior research job pays much less than a senior fund manager's role, and the employer, the size of the fund and its results all matter. Pay in big cities is usually higher than elsewhere.
Myth and fact
Try it now
- Class 7–9Choose one listed company you know well. Find its latest annual report summary on its website and write down what it sells and how it makes money.
- Class 10–12Take one free week of a financial markets or management course on NPTEL and note the terms you do not understand.Open link ↗
- College or afterRead SEBI's pages on how mutual funds work. Then follow one fund's monthly factsheet for three months and note how its holdings change.Open link ↗
Good to know
- A fund manager's job is judged over years, not weeks. Keep a record of your research calls.
- The NISM-Series-XXI-B certificate is valid for three years and must be renewed through a CPE programme.
- Many CFA candidates work full-time. The CFA Program is self-paced, so plan your study hours carefully.
- Check whether a firm is SEBI-registered before you trust anyone with money. A certificate alone does not give permission to manage other people's funds.
