Class 11–12 subjects
Any Class 12 stream is fine. Maths, statistics or computer science help with the data side, and clear English helps with the writing and talking, which is most of the job.
First degree
A bachelor's degree in any field is the usual start. BBA, B.Com, economics, statistics, computer science or B.Tech are the most common. An MBA, often in business analytics, is optional and helps with some roles and promotions.
Entrance exams
Entry jobs usually have no entrance exam; they look at your degree, projects and interview. An MBA needs a separate entrance test such as CAT, set by the institute or exam body.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Talking to business teams to find out what they need; writing requirements and process maps; checking data to test an idea; working with developers and testers; getting sign-off from clients and managers.

A day in the work
The day often starts with a short team call with developers and testers, where you check what was finished and what is blocked. Late morning you sit with a branch manager or sales head to understand a problem, such as why loan approvals take too long. The afternoon goes to writing requirements or a process map and checking a sample of data in Excel or SQL to test your idea. The day ends with a review where the team and client ask questions, and you update the document until everyone agrees.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–12Choose any Class 12 stream. Build maths and data comfort, and practise writing clear short notes, because the job is mostly reading, writing and talking to people.
  2. Step 2 · After Class 12Take a bachelor's degree such as BBA, B.Com, economics, B.Tech or BCA. Most employers accept a degree in any field for entry roles. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · During graduationLearn Excel, SQL and one dashboard tool such as Power BI or Tableau. Try an internship where you map a process or study a company's data.
  4. Step 4 · First job (0–2 years)Entry roles often mean gathering requirements, writing documents and supporting testing. The IIBA entry-level certificate, ECBA, has no experience rule and can be taken early.
  5. Step 5 · After 2–3 years (optional)The IIBA CCBA certificate needs about 3,750 hours of business analysis work within the last seven years, plus 21 hours of professional development.
  6. Step 6 · After 5+ years (optional)The IIBA CBAP certificate needs five or more years, 7,500 hours of work in the last 10 years, 35 hours of professional development and two references.

What people earn

Pay depends a great deal on experience, the type of employer (product firms, banks and consulting usually pay more than IT services), and the city, and fresher pay is far lower than pay after several years.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must do an MBA to become a business analyst.
Fact: No. A bachelor's degree in any field is usually enough for entry jobs. An MBA can help with some roles and promotions, but many analysts never take one.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Pick a small problem at home or school, such as the queue at the canteen or how the milk order is handled. Write the steps as they happen now, then suggest one change.
  • Class 10–12Browse the free NPTEL course on business analytics for management decision and watch a few lectures. You do not need to pay for the optional certificate exam.Open link ↗
  • College or afterLearn basic Excel and SQL from free material, then make one small report from public data, such as district-level school or rainfall figures.

Good to know

  • Business analyst is not a licensed profession. Your degree, skills and work record matter most for hiring.
  • IIBA certificates (ECBA, CCBA, CBAP) are private and voluntary. Check the current rules on iiba.org before you apply.
  • Job titles vary. Many entry jobs are called Associate or Trainee Business Analyst, and some sit inside IT or data teams.
  • Pay figures online differ a lot because they come from different sites. Treat them as rough guides only.
