It may not suit you if you dislike

What the work is like

Designing chairs, tables, storage and fittings for homes, offices, schools and public places. Sketching ideas, making prototypes, choosing wood, metal or plastic, and checking comfort and size. Working with factories, carpenters and clients to keep the cost of production in check.

A day in the work
A typical morning starts with a look at drawings or a prototype from the day before. You might spend the middle of the day sketching options, measuring a chair for comfort or choosing between wood and metal for cost. Later you may visit a workshop to see how a sample is being built, or call a client to discuss changes. The day usually ends with notes for the next prototype.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–12Build a habit of sketching, making small models and noticing how everyday objects are built and used. Design schools test drawing and visual thinking, not only marks.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Take a design entrance test. UCEED is the test for B.Des at IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Roorkee and IIITDM Jabalpur. NID DAT is for NID's B.Des and M.Des. UCEED is usually held in January; the 2027 dates were not yet confirmed in the sources I could read. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 2a · Class 12 (NID route)For the 2027-28 cycle, NID's official handbook gives 30 November 2026 as the online form deadline and 20 December 2026 as the DAT Prelims date. Prelims are followed by a Mains stage with a studio test and interview.
  4. Step 3 · 4 yearsB.Des in Furniture or Product Design. At NID Ahmedabad, Furniture & Interior Design had 13 seats in the 2026-27 handbook. The IIT programmes that teach product and industrial design also cover materials, manufacturing and ergonomics.
  5. Step 4 · After a degree (optional)M.Des through CEED or NID's own DAT. CEED 2026 results came out on 4 March 2026, and the score is valid for one year. CEED is open to graduates of any three-year degree, with no upper age limit.
  6. Step 5 · After graduationBuild a portfolio of projects, apply to furniture studios, design firms, manufacturers and interior companies, and gain experience on the shop floor before starting your own studio if you choose.

Good to knowThe page gives no official course fees, only the exam and counselling fees; the NID ₹14 lakh figure is from a non-official guide, so it is left out.

Fees from: UCEED 2026 Information Brochure, IIT Bombay (official) · NID B.Des Admissions Handbook 2026-27 (official PDF, application fees) · NID Admissions Handbook 2027-28 (official PDF, application fees). Fees change every year — check the college's own fee page before you pay.

What people earn

Pay depends a lot on the studio or company, the city and your portfolio. Beginners usually start modestly, and experienced designers who run their own studios or lead product teams can earn much more.

Myth and fact

Myth: Furniture design is just carpentry with a nice look.
Fact: Good furniture design also depends on ergonomics, materials and how the piece is manufactured at a sensible cost. Carpentry skill helps, but the job is mostly about the user and the production process.

For girls and students with disabilities

UCEED reserves 5% of seats in each category for candidates with disabilities, and candidates with at least 40% impairment can use the PwD sub-category. NID also offers PwD relaxations in its fee and category rules.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Make a small cardboard or wooden model of a stool or shelf. Measure it, then draw it from the front, side and top.
  • Class 10–12Read the NID admissions handbook to see what the DAT tests, then sketch objects around you for 15 minutes a day.Open link ↗
  • College or afterVisit a furniture workshop or carpentry unit in your town and watch how a piece is made from drawing to finish. Ask what is hard about making it.

Good to know

  • NID's Furniture & Interior Design B.Des had only 13 seats in the 2026-27 handbook, so the competition is high. Check the latest handbook each year, because seat numbers change.
  • A UCEED rank does not guarantee an IIT seat. You must also apply separately through the joint seat allocation.
  • Furniture design sits between art, engineering and business. If you like the making side, carpentry and drafting skills help a lot.
