Industrial / Product Designer
Designs physical products like appliances, gadgets and tools, from sketches to manufacturable models.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Seeing a rough idea become a real object that people can hold and use
- Sketching, making models and trying things with your hands
- Noticing how people use everyday things and finding a simpler way
- Several years of study, and entrance exams where you may need more than one attempt
- Working within factory costs, deadlines and safety rules, not just your own ideas
- A competitive field where your portfolio and projects often count as much as your marks
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 (or equivalent) in any stream: Science, Commerce or Arts. Students who are appearing in Class 12 in the same year can apply. Some design schools accept a 3-year diploma, but not all do, so check each institute's rules.
- First degree
- B.Des, usually 4 years, at an IIT design school, a National Institute of Design (NID) or another design school. M.Des is a postgraduate course taken after a bachelor's degree in any subject.
- Entrance exams
- UCEED (run by IIT Bombay) for B.Des at IITs and other participating schools. NID DAT for B.Des and some master's programmes at the NIDs. CEED (also IIT Bombay) for M.Des.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Designing physical products such as home appliances, gadgets, tools, furniture and parts of vehicles. Sketching ideas, making 3D models and prototypes, testing them with users, and working with engineers and factories to make the product affordable and safe to produce.
A day in the work
A product designer may start with a review call with engineers about the casing of a new mixer-grinder. Later, she sketches several handle shapes and checks them against the limits the factory gives for moulding. In the afternoon she builds a rough 3D-printed model and watches a few users try it, noting where they struggle. The day ends with notes for the next design review and a list of cost cuts the team must agree on.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 9–10Build a sketching habit. Keep a sketchbook, draw everyday objects like a mixer, a chair or a bicycle, and note what you would change to make them work better.
- Step 2 · Class 12 (registration)Pass Class 12 in any stream. Register for UCEED 2027 on the official UCEED website by 31 October 2026. A late-fee window is reported to run to 6 November 2026. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · Class 12 (January 2027)Sit UCEED 2027 on 17 January 2027. It is three hours long: a computer-based part (Part A) and a sketching part on paper (Part B). You can take it up to two times in consecutive years, and a score is valid for one academic year. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Class 12 (NID route)If you prefer NID, apply for NID DAT 2027. The Prelims is reported for 20 December 2026, with registration closing 30 November 2026. Only the Mains, a studio test, decides merit. After the Mains you must also submit a separate NID admission form to take part in seat allotment. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · 4 yearsB.Des at an IIT, IIITDM or NID. Most of the course is studio work: projects, model-making, materials and a final thesis or product project. Seats for UCEED schools are allotted through a joint process, while NID runs its own.
- Optional · After a bachelor's degreeM.Des through CEED. CEED 2027 results are due on 3 March 2027, and scorecards are valid for one year. Each institute then runs its own written test, interview or portfolio review.
Ways in
- B.Des through UCEEDIIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore, IIT Roorkee and IIITDM Jabalpur admit B.Des students through UCEED, and several other design schools also accept it.
- B.Des through NID DATThe National Institute of Design admits students through its own entrance: a Prelims followed by a Mains studio test. It is open to Class 12 students from any stream.
- M.Des after a degreeCEED is the common entrance for M.Des at IIT Bombay and other participating institutes. Each institute then runs its own selection.

What people earn
Starting pay varies a lot by company, city and whether you join a large manufacturer, a design studio or a startup; pay usually rises with experience and a strong portfolio.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
UCEED reserves 5% of seats in each category for persons with disability (PwD), and the scribe facility is allowed for the computer part, though not for the sketching part. At IIT Bombay's M.Des programme, 5% of seats are reserved for PwD candidates, and SC, ST and PwD students are exempt from tuition.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Pick three everyday objects at home. Draw each from the front, side and top, then write two changes that would make it easier to use or clean.
- Class 10–12Download the free UCEED past question papers and answer keys from IIT Bombay's official downloads page. Try the sketching section on paper in 30 minutes and compare your work with the key's approach.Open link ↗
- College or afterVisit a local carpentry, fabrication or moulding workshop and ask how a simple product is made. Note the materials, tools and steps, and redesign one item with those limits in mind.
Good to know
- UCEED and NID DAT are separate exams with separate forms and deadlines. Many students apply to both, so track both official sites.
- Design schools judge a portfolio, sketching and studio tests as well as marks. Keep a sketchbook and a small folder of your own projects from Class 9 onwards.
- Product design is not a licensed profession in India. Engineering skills such as B.Tech in mechanical or industrial design are a useful background for this work.
