GST and Tax Practitioner
Files returns and advises individuals and businesses on GST and income tax compliance.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Working with numbers and rules, and seeing a return come out right
- Helping small shop owners and families handle tax with less fear
- Steady, repeat work with a clear calendar of deadlines
- Monthly deadlines; a missed date can mean penalties and stress for the client
- Tax rules change often, so you must keep studying for years
- Clients may panic over notices, so you need patience and clear written records
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 in any stream. Commerce, Accountancy and Maths give the easiest start. To enrol as a GST Practitioner, you need a graduate or postgraduate degree in Commerce, Law, Banking (including Higher Auditing), Business Administration or Business Management. A recognised foreign degree also counts. CA, CS or CMA finals count too, as do some retired tax officers.
- First degree
- A three-year graduation such as B.Com, BBA, BBM or LLB is the usual route. A B.A. or B.Sc. does not qualify on its own unless you also hold one of the listed qualifications.
- Entrance exams
- The NACIN GST Practitioner exam: 100 multiple-choice questions, 200 marks, 2.5 hours, 50% to pass. Its current schedule is unclear (see notes). Income-tax work has no single entry exam; most people build skills through a degree, courses and on-the-job training.
- Licence or registration
- GST Practitioner enrolment under Rule 83 of the CGST Rules. You apply on the GST portal (Form PCT-01) and receive an enrolment certificate (Form PCT-02). Each client must then authorise you on the portal (Form PCT-05).
What the work is like
Preparing and filing monthly, quarterly and annual GST returns for clients; checking input tax credit; replying to notices; helping with income-tax returns; advising on invoices and registration; keeping records in order.
A day in the work
Your day often starts with a list of client due dates, because GST returns follow a monthly and quarterly calendar. You log into the portal, match each client's sales and purchase records with their books, and fix mismatches that block input tax credit. Afternoons may go to calls or messages from clients about notices, invoices or new registrations. You end by noting what you did in each client's file and checking whether a recent change in law affects anyone.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Choose Commerce if you can, or at least keep Accountancy and Maths. Learn how a shop records sales and purchases, and how a tax line appears on a bill.
- Step 2 · Graduation (about 3 years)Complete a B.Com, BBA, BBM or LLB, or a postgraduate degree in one of the listed subjects. You can apply only after the degree is awarded.
- Step 3 · After graduationEnrol on the GST portal (gst.gov.in) in Form PCT-01. If the officer approves, you receive the enrolment certificate in Form PCT-02. This is the step that makes you a GST Practitioner in law.
- Step 4 · NACIN examPass the NACIN GST Practitioner exam: 50% of 200 marks, with no negative marking. The rules say it is held twice a year, but I could not confirm a current 2026 schedule on the official sites, so check nacin.gov.in and gst.gov.in before you plan. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Clients and practiceGet each client to authorise you on the portal (Form PCT-05). They remain legally responsible for their filings. Keep records clean, and keep up with changes in GST law all your working life.
Ways in
- Degree routeGraduate in Commerce, Law, Banking, Business Administration or Management, then enrol as a GST Practitioner.
- Professional routePass the final exam of CA, CS or CMA. These qualifications also allow enrolment, and they open wider work in tax and audit.
- Retired tax officer routeRetired officers of state commercial tax or central tax departments, who held a Group B gazetted post or higher for at least two years, can enrol.

What people earn
Earnings vary a great deal: a new practitioner with a few small clients earns far less than an experienced one with business clients, and city, client mix and extra qualifications such as CA or CS make a big difference.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
The exam registration asks whether a candidate has a disability, but I found no special relaxations, quotas or reserved openings for this role. The same enrolment rules apply to everyone.

Good to know
- Sources disagree about the NACIN exam. Rule 83 requires the exam to stay enrolled, and older notices describe twice-yearly sittings. One 2026 guide says no exam has been held since 2018. Check nacin.gov.in and gst.gov.in for the current position.
- A 2023 amendment removed the Certificate of Practice requirement for CA, CS and CMA applicants on Form PCT-01 (reported).
- Enrolment does not make you a tax lawyer or auditor. The client is still responsible for the return, and complex disputes often need a CA or an advocate.
- Many people in this work later take up CA, CS or CMA, which opens the professional route.
