Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Working with numbers, rules and records, and spotting what does not add up
- A stable government job with clear promotions and a pension-linked career path
- Work that matters to the country, since taxes fund roads, schools and hospitals
- Postings and transfers can be anywhere in India, far from home
- Competition is very tough, and many people prepare for years before getting selected
- Much of the work is desk and paperwork, and you will sometimes face unhappy or angry taxpayers
- Class 11–12 subjects
- No fixed Class 11–12 subjects. Any stream works, because the exam is the same for everyone. It tests Maths, Reasoning, English and General Awareness, so Class 10-level Maths and good English help a lot.
- First degree
- A bachelor's degree in any subject from a recognised university, usually 3 years. You must hold the degree by the cut-off date given in the SSC notice (reported).
- Entrance exams
- SSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level), held by the Staff Selection Commission. Tier-I and Tier-II are both computer-based. There is no interview.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Checking income tax returns and records, finding mismatches, issuing notices, visiting businesses for surveys and verification, collecting information on tax evasion, and helping senior officers with assessments and recovery.
A day in the work
You reach the office, check your list of files and open the department's computer system. Much of the morning goes in matching a taxpayer's return with bank, property or TDS data, and noting what does not add up. After lunch you may draft notices, meet taxpayers or their accountants who come to explain, or update records for your senior officer. On some days you go out with a team to verify a business, which means talking to people, reading account books and writing a careful report before you leave.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 9–12Choose any stream you like. Build Maths and English basics now, and start reading a newspaper daily. These are the skills the exam tests.
- Step 2 · 3 years after Class 12Finish a bachelor's degree in any subject. Commerce, economics or law help you understand the work, but they are not required. Keep your marksheets and certificates safe, because they are checked later.
- Step 3 · Apply onlineRegister on ssc.gov.in with One-Time Registration and apply when the CGL notice comes out. In 2026 the notice came on 21 May. The age limit for this post is 18–30 years (relaxations for reserved categories). The age cut-off date was 1 August 2026 (reported).
- Step 4 · Tier-IA 100-question computer test of 200 marks in 60 minutes. It covers Reasoning, General Awareness, Maths and English. In 2026 each section has its own 15-minute timer, and each wrong answer loses 0.50 marks. This tier only shortlists you for Tier-II. The 2026 Tier-I was reported to run from 30 September to 30 October. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Tier-IIPaper-I is compulsory: Maths, Reasoning, English, General Awareness, plus a computer knowledge test and a data entry speed test. These last two are qualifying only. Your Tier-II marks decide your rank. You then list posts in order of preference, and Income Tax Inspector competes with other Level 7 posts. Tier-II was tentatively planned for December 2026 (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Document verification and medicalSSC checks your age, degree and category certificates. A medical examination is also reported for this post, so read the current notice for the exact rules. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 7 · Training and probationNewly recruited Inspectors do an induction course at a regional campus of the National Academy of Direct Taxes. After that you are posted to an Income Tax office, anywhere in India, and serve a probation period before being confirmed. Later, Inspectors can sit a departmental exam to be promoted to Income Tax Officer.
Ways in
- Direct entry through SSC CGLThe main way in: graduate, then SSC CGL, as described in the steps above.
- Promotion from within the departmentPeople who join the Income Tax Department as Tax Assistants or Stenographers can later become Inspectors by passing a departmental exam. NADT regional campuses run training courses for this exam. Check the department's current recruitment rules for eligibility and years of service. (reported)
Your real chances
In 2025, about 28 lakh people applied for SSC CGL and about 13.5 lakh appeared in Tier-I, for about 14,582 tentative vacancies across all posts (news reports of government figures). Income Tax Inspector is only a small slice of these. The 2026 tentative list shows about 595 Income Tax Inspector vacancies out of about 10,731 in total, and SSC says these can change (reported).

What people earn
Pay Level 7, ₹44,900 to ₹1,42,400 basic + allowances such as DA, HRA and TA (7th CPC), as listed for this post in the SSC CGL 2026 notice (pay figure reported from secondary quotes of the notice).
Pay is fixed by the government pay scale, so it is the same on paper everywhere. Take-home pay is higher in big cities because of house rent allowance, and it grows steadily with promotions and years of service.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
SSC gives upper-age relaxation for SC/ST (5 years), OBC (3 years) and persons with benchmark disabilities (10 years, more if also SC/ST/OBC), and extra age relaxation for widows and divorced women (reported). The 2025 vacancy table shows some Income Tax Inspector posts set aside for persons with disabilities, but check the current notice for which disability types qualify (reported). I could not confirm a separate physical test for this post, so read the current notice and medical rules before you apply.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Ask a parent to show you a payslip or a shop bill. Find where income tax (TDS) or GST appears and write two lines on why the government collects it.
- Class 10–12Pick one free course on basic economics or accounting on SWAYAM, and finish its first week. This builds the Maths and reasoning habit the SSC exam rewards.Open link ↗

Good to know
- SSC CGL is held once a year and the details change every year: vacancies, dates, age cut-off and fees. Always read the latest notice on ssc.gov.in.
- This post is not the same as Inspector (Central Excise/GST) or Preventive Officer. Those belong to a different board (CBIC) and have their own physical standards.
- Income Tax Inspector is a Group B non-gazetted post at Pay Level 7 in the 2026 notice. Some websites still call it Group C, because older notices did.
- Final selection rests on Tier-II marks, category and your post preference. A high rank gives more choice of posts and cities.
