Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Working with big machines and seeing a road, bridge or building take shape
  • Being outdoors and doing hands-on work rather than desk work
  • Skilled work that can be learned in months, not years
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Hot sun, dust, noise and vibration, often in remote places or on night shifts
  • High responsibility: one mistake can injure people, so you must stay alert for long hours
  • Work can follow projects and move you from site to site, away from home
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 10 pass is the usual starting point. Science and Maths in Class 10 help, and the DGT's 2-year ITI mining-machinery trade asks for them. Some short operator courses accept Class 8 or Class 11 plus experience, but employers prefer Class 10 or ITI. You must be 18 to take a job running a crane or lifting machine. Any stream in Class 11–12 is fine.
First degree
No degree needed. The main routes are an ITI trade (1–2 years) or a short NSQF Level 4 operator course (about 200–350 hours), followed by supervised work on site.
Entrance exams
No national entrance exam. ITI admission is run by each state, usually on Class 10 marks. Operator courses end with an assessment by the sector skill council. For the Excavator Operator qualification, the minimum aggregate pass mark is 70%.
Licence or registration
There is no single national "crane licence" or "excavator licence" that we could find in official sources. Three rules apply. (1) On construction sites, the employer must make sure every crane driver has adequate skill and training for that machine, and is over 18 and medically examined. (2) In mines, workers and heavy machine operators go through Mines Vocational Training and get a training certificate. (3) A driving licence is a separate matter. In 2020 the Road Transport Ministry said heavy earth-moving machines used off the road are not "motor vehicles", so states were asked not to insist on a licence for them. A truck-mounted crane course in the NCVT list asks for an HMV licence.

What the work is like

Digging trenches and foundations, loading trucks, lifting steel and precast beams, shifting containers and machinery. You do daily checks on the machine, follow hand signals from a rigger, and report faults.

A day in the work
You reach the site early and walk around the machine. You check oil, hydraulic hoses, tracks or tyres, and brakes, and write it in the log. Then you work from a plan. An excavator operator digs a trench to depth and loads trucks. A crane operator lifts a load after the rigger hooks it on and gives signals. You stop work in strong wind, rain or if the ground looks unsafe, and you tell the supervisor about any fault before you leave.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 8–10Finish Class 10. Pay attention to Maths (angles, weight, levers) and Science (force, pressure, simple machines). Note the age rule: running a lifting machine on a construction site is allowed only from 18, so you will have time to train first.
  2. Step 2 · After Class 10 (1–2 years, optional but useful)Join an ITI trade that teaches how heavy machines work. Examples are Mechanic Mining Machinery (2 years, DGT, entry is Class 10 with Science and Maths) and Mechanic Motor Vehicle. Ask your state ITI which heavy-vehicle trades it offers. These are mostly maintenance trades, so you still need an operator course afterwards.
  3. Step 3 · Operator course (a few months)Do an NSQF Level 4 operator course. The national standard for Excavator Operator (IES/Q0103) and Hydra Crane Operator (IES/Q0108) is set by the Infrastructure Equipment Skill Council. An NCVT-listed Crane Operator course for Class 10 pass is 350 hours. The Excavator Operator course in the Maharashtra government's course list is 210 hours. Choose a centre that has real machines and simulators, and check that the certificate is NSQF-aligned.
  4. Step 4 · Papers and fitnessGet a medical check, which is needed before you are employed and again at regular intervals. Get a driving licence of the right class if the machine will travel on public roads. For truck-mounted cranes, an HMV licence is asked for. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · First job (1–3 years)Start as a helper, assistant or trainee under a senior operator, and learn rigging, signals and load charts. Work on construction sites, mines or ports. Mines need a Mines Vocational Training certificate before you operate heavy machines.
  6. Step 6 · LaterMove to bigger machines such as tower or crawler cranes. You can also become a senior operator, site supervisor or trainer, or move into machine maintenance.

Ways in

  • ITI first, then operator courseTake a 1–2 year DGT ITI trade after Class 10, then a short operator course. This gives you a National Trade Certificate and a stronger base if you want to move into repair work later.
  • Direct operator courseDo a short NSQF operator course (excavator, hydra crane, crane) straight after Class 10, 11 or 12. It is quicker. You still need supervised site hours.
  • Helper to operator on site or in a mineMany people start as a helper or rigger and learn on the machine. In mines, employers send workers for Mines Vocational Training. Pay and growth are slower without a certificate.

What people earn

Trainees and helpers earn little at first. Pay usually rises with experience, with the type of machine (tower and large crawler cranes need more skill), and with the employer. Mines, ports and big infrastructure firms often pay more than small contractors. Work can be seasonal or tied to a project, so income may not be steady.

Myth and fact

Myth: If you can drive a car or tractor, you can just sit in a JCB or crane and start working.
Fact: The law expects crane drivers on construction sites to have adequate skill and training for that machine, to be over 18, and to be medically checked. Mines also need a training certificate. Good operators spend months learning controls, load charts and signals.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Build a small hydraulic arm from cardboard, wooden sticks and two syringes joined by a tube filled with water. Notice how a small push at one end moves a heavy load at the other.

  • College or afterDownload the free Excavator Operator or Hydra Crane Operator handbooks from the Infrastructure Equipment Skill Council and read the safety units before you choose a training centre.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • Under the Building and Other Construction Workers Central Rules, 1998, no one under 18 may control a lifting appliance. Crane drivers must have adequate skill and training for that type of machine.
  • The Road Transport Ministry's 2020 advice covers off-road earth-moving machines like dozers, shovels and dumpers. Cranes or machines that go on public roads can be treated differently. Check with your state transport office.
  • Qualification Packs are reviewed every few years. Ask the training centre which version it follows.
  • This is dangerous work. Companies value a clean safety record more than speed.
