What the work is like

Recording stock in the warehouse system, planning picking and packing, checking goods in and out, coordinating dispatch and delivery times, and keeping the team safe and on schedule.

A day in the work
You start by checking the day's dispatch list and making sure the stock for each order is ready. Through the day you supervise packing and loading, and fix any mismatch between the physical stock and the system. You update the records on a computer, check GST paperwork, and sort out any late or damaged goods with drivers and clients. The day ends with a handover to the next shift.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–12Do well in Maths and English. Learn basic computer work, such as typing and spreadsheets. Warehouses use these every day.
  2. Step 2 · After Class 12Choose a certificate or diploma in warehouse or logistics operations. Check that the training centre is recognised by LSC or NSQF and ask for its fee in writing. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · First job, about 1 yearWork as a warehouse executive or associate. LSC's current Warehouse Executive standard accepts a 12th pass with one year of warehouse or data-entry experience.
  4. Step 4 · AssessmentPass the LSC skill assessment for the role. For the executive level, you need at least 70% to pass.
  5. Step 5 · Supervisor level, 3–5 years or moreLSC's Warehouse Supervisor standard is at NSQF level 5. It asks for a diploma in any subject. Experience and team skills count a lot too. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. OptionalShort online courses on warehouse management, ERP or supply chain. LSC lists these at a fixed fee per programme.

What people earn

Pay depends a lot on your experience, the city you work in and whether the employer is a large 3PL, an e-commerce company or a small local business. Entry jobs pay far less than supervisor or manager roles.

Myth and fact

Myth: Warehouse work is only heavy lifting and carrying boxes.
Fact: LSC's official standards include ERP data entry, GST invoice checks, health and safety rules and team supervision. The physical work is real, but the record-keeping is just as important.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Ask a family member who runs a shop or godown to show you how stock is counted and stored. Write down three things you noticed.
  • Class 10–12Make a simple stock list for 20 household or shop items in a spreadsheet, with quantities and totals. Practise sorting and filtering the list.
  • College or afterRead the free Warehouse Executive qualification file on the LSC site to see the real tasks, skills and entry rules for the job.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • LSC uses two different titles here. Warehouse Executive (NSQF level 4) is the entry-level job. Warehouse Supervisor (NSQF level 5) is the step up.
  • The newer Warehouse Executive file was approved in February 2026. Older files mention a longer course of about 510 to 570 hours, so check the training centre's hours.
  • Warehouse work often includes early, late or night shifts in busy seasons. Ask about shift timings before you join.
  • A certificate from a private institute is not a government job. Check that it is recognised before you pay.
