What the work is like

Running the day-to-day working of a hospital: bed and ward planning, staff rosters, budgets and purchasing, patient admission and billing, insurance claims, medical records, and quality audits such as NABH accreditation. You work with doctors, nurses, finance and the hospital's owners or trustees.

A day in the work
A typical day starts with a check of bed occupancy, staff shifts and any problems overnight. You might sit in a meeting with doctors and nurses about a staff shortage on one ward, then review the month's budget for medicines and equipment. In the afternoon you walk the wards to check cleanliness, consent forms and waiting times, and you end the day approving insurance claims or a quality report.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–12Finish Class 12 in any stream with steady marks. Get comfortable with numbers, English writing and basic computer use, since most of this work is records, budgets and reports.
  2. Step 2 · 3 years after Class 12Complete a bachelor's degree in any subject. Aim for at least about 50% marks, because many MHA and MBA colleges use that cut-off (45% for reserved categories). (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · Final year of graduation or afterApply for an MHA or MBA healthcare management seat. Check each college's entrance test, interview or group discussion, and whether it is approved by a university or the state. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · 2 yearsStudy hospital operations, healthcare finance, human resources, medical law, quality and health policy. Good courses include supervised field training or placement in a hospital. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · First jobs, then 5–15 yearsStart in operations, billing, insurance, medical records or quality. Senior roles such as hospital CEO or COO usually come after years of experience. NABH assessor roles, for example, ask for 10 to 15 years of hospital operations or quality work.

Ways in

  • RoutePG diploma in hospital and health management, open to some MBBS, BDS or BAMS graduates. Check the college's recognition before joining.

What people earn

Pay depends on the hospital's size and type, the city, and whether you start as an executive or move up to a manager's post, with private hospitals and corporate chains usually paying more than small clinics.

Myth and fact

Myth: You have to be a doctor to become a hospital administrator.
Fact: Not for most jobs. Many people enter with any graduate degree plus an MHA or MBA in healthcare management. Only the MD (Hospital Administration) route at AIIMS and similar places is for MBBS graduates.

Good to know

  • Course names differ: MHA, MBA (Hospital Management), PG diploma and MD (Hospital Administration) are not the same. Check what the degree is called, who awards it and whether it is recognised before you pay.
  • Quality accreditation, mainly NABH, shapes much of the work. Knowing its standards helps, and hospitals often hire people for quality roles.
  • The MD route at AIIMS has a separate entrance exam and is only for MBBS graduates. Eligibility rules are updated often, so read the current prospectus.
