Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Turning a story or idea into a picture people remember
- Setting your own style, hours and way of working
- Seeing your work in books, apps, ads or comics
- Income can be uneven, especially in the first few years
- You also run the business: finding clients, pricing, and chasing payments
- Revisions and tight deadlines can be stressful, and years of practice come before steady work
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 in any stream. Your drawing, sketching and visual sense matter more than your school subjects. Design colleges usually also test drawing or ask for a portfolio.
- First degree
- A four-year B.Des (illustration or communication design) or a three-to-four-year BFA with an illustration focus. Many illustrators also learn through short courses and practice. Your portfolio often matters more than the degree.
- Entrance exams
- For NID's B.Des, the NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT). For IIT design programmes, UCEED (reported). For NIFT programmes, the NIFT entrance exam (reported). Many universities also ask for a portfolio.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Drawing characters, scenes and covers for books, comics, magazines, ads, games and apps. Sketching rough ideas, making revisions after client feedback, and delivering final files on time.
A day in the work
A freelance illustrator often starts by reading client emails and checking the brief for the day. Mornings usually go to rough sketches or layouts for one project, then a few hours of inking or colouring on a tablet. Afternoons may include sending a work-in-progress to a client, invoicing, or posting new work online. Evenings are sometimes for personal sketches, because paid work can slow down in some months.
The path, step by step
- Class 9–12Draw every day in a sketchbook: people, animals, objects, and short comic strips. Keep a folder of your best pages.
- Class 12 (for NID's 2027-28 intake)Finish Class 12 in any stream. NID's 2027-28 handbook sets online applications until 30 November 2026 and the DAT Prelims on 20 December 2026. Check the handbook again before you apply, as dates can change.
- Class 12 · Entrance stageIf you clear the DAT Prelims, you face a studio test and sensitivity interview at NID. Other design entrances, such as UCEED or NIFT, have their own rounds. (reported — check with the official body)
- Degree · 3–4 yearsStudy a B.Des (four years) or BFA (three to four years). Use studio time to build 10–15 strong pieces for your portfolio. (reported — check with the official body)
- Final yearMake a simple portfolio website or Behance page. Include process sketches and short project briefs, not just final pictures. Look for internships at publishers, ad agencies or studios.
- After studyStart freelancing on platforms and by direct outreach to publishers and agencies. Keep a basic contract template, invoices and income records from the start.
Ways in
- B.Des (Illustration or Communication Design)Four-year design degree. Entry is by entrance test and often a portfolio. Good for those who like design thinking as well as drawing.
- BFA (Fine Arts)Three to four years of drawing, painting and visual training, often at state universities. Entry is usually by merit and sometimes an aptitude test.
- Self-taught with a strong portfolioLearn through practice, online courses and freelance jobs. Possible, but you need strong discipline and a clear portfolio to win clients.

What people earn
Earnings vary a lot. Beginners may wait a long time for steady clients, while experienced illustrators with a clear niche, a strong portfolio and repeat clients earn more. Your city and whether you work for a publisher, ad agency or game studio also make a big difference.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
At NID, the application fee is lower for women, SC and ST candidates, and candidates with disabilities. Reserved categories also get an age relaxation (reported). These rules apply to the NID entrance route, not to the career itself.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Make a one-page comic of four panels about a story you like. Show the characters in three different poses.
- Class 10–12Draw from life for 20 minutes a day for a month: a room, a fruit, a friend's hand. Date each sketch so you can see your progress.
- College or afterRead the NID B.Des handbook to see how the DAT and studio test work, then plan your portfolio around those skills.Open link ↗
