Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Turning a vague idea into something people can see and use
  • Seeing your work on a shop shelf, a bus stop or a phone screen
  • Playing with colour, type and shape every day
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Client changes and tight deadlines, sometimes late into the evening
  • Entrance seats are very few, so rejection is common
  • Freelance work can be uneven, with income that rises and falls

What the work is like

Designing logos, posters, packaging, books, magazines, social media posts and brand identity; sketching ideas, choosing type and colour, and preparing files for print or screen; presenting concepts to clients and art directors and revising them.

A day in the work
A junior designer at an agency usually starts with a short team check-in and a look at the day's client briefs. The morning often goes to rough sketches and ideas, then turning the best one into a clean layout on screen. Afternoons bring feedback, where a client or art director asks for changes and the work is reworked. The day ends with files prepared for printers or websites, often against a deadline.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–11Build a daily drawing habit and keep a sketchbook. Learn basic software early. Your stream does not block design entrances, so choose subjects you enjoy and can finish well.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12 (2026–27)Register for UCEED 2027 on uceed.iitb.ac.in. The regular registration deadline was 31 October 2026. Check the official brochure for any late-fee window.
  3. Step 3 · Class 12 (2026–27)Register for NID DAT 2027 on admissions.nid.edu. The DAT Prelims are expected on 20 December 2026. Stage 2 is a studio test and in-person sensitivity test for a limited number of candidates. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · 17 January 2027 onwardsSit UCEED 2027 on 17 January 2027 (3 hours): Part A is computer-based, and Part B is hand sketching. After results, IIT Bombay runs a joint seat allocation for the participating institutes. For NID, you must submit a separate online admission application after the Mains; missing it makes you ineligible for all NIDs. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · 4 yearsStudy B.Des with a portfolio of projects, typefaces, posters, packaging and brand work. Some NID campuses, such as Andhra Pradesh, start with a mandatory one-year foundation programme. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Optional · After B.DesWork in an agency, studio or in-house design team, or take a master's such as M.Des. Freelance work is also common, but income can be uneven at the start.

What people earn

Pay depends a lot on your portfolio, the type of employer and the city you work in, and beginners usually earn much less than experienced designers who lead projects.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must have been drawing like an artist since childhood to get into design.
Fact: Design entrances test sketching, visual reasoning and design thinking, not finished art skill. They accept candidates from any Class 12 stream, so you can start late and still apply.

For girls and students with disabilities

The UCEED brochure reserves 5% of seats in each category for candidates with disabilities, and a scribe can help with the computer part (Part A) but not the sketching part (Part B). Women candidates pay a lower UCEED registration fee.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Keep a sketchbook. Draw one everyday object from life for 15 minutes, five days this month, and note which colours and letter shapes you like.
  • Class 10–12Open the official UCEED downloads page, take one past Part A paper and one Part B sketch question, and attempt them under timed conditions without help.Open link ↗
  • College or afterDesign one small poster for a real local event or your school club, and keep your process sketches in a folder to start a portfolio.

Good to know

  • The UCEED official brochure says the exam is open to Class 12 pass or appearing candidates from any stream, but each participating institute sets its own eligibility, and some may not accept a three-year diploma.
  • A UCEED score is valid for one academic year only, and you can take it at most two times in consecutive years (reported).
  • NID DAT rules change each cycle. Check the current handbook before you apply, because age cut-off dates move forward every year (reported).
