Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Words, grammar and finding the exact right term
- Quiet, careful desk work with a clear purpose
- The steady routine and security of a government job
- Very few vacancies, so the exam is hard to crack
- Repetitive office work, and you may be posted far from home or transferred
- You must reach a Master's and also get a translation diploma or experience before you can even apply
- Class 11–12 subjects
- No fixed Class 11–12 subjects. Any stream works. What counts is your degree: a Master's in Hindi, English, or another subject in which Hindi or English was a compulsory or elective subject, or the medium of the exam, at degree level. Strong Hindi and English from school help a lot.
- First degree
- Bachelor's (usually 3 years) and then a Master's (2 years) in Hindi or English, or in another subject with the Hindi/English condition met. You also need a translation diploma or certificate, or 2 years of translation experience.
- Entrance exams
- Combined Hindi Translators Examination by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). It is a separate exam. It is not a paper inside SSC CGL. Paper-I is a computer-based test in General Hindi and General English. Paper-II is a descriptive paper on translation and essays.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Translating circulars, rules, reports, letters, notices and parliamentary papers between Hindi and English. Checking that the meaning and the official tone stay correct. Using standard government terms. Helping the office follow the Official Language policy.
A day in the work
You reach the office, open the files on your desk and find a draft circular in English that must go out in Hindi by evening. You translate it, then check that the terms match the standard government glossary. Your senior officer reads it and suggests a few changes. In the afternoon you may proof-read a report, update a word list, or help with a Hindi workshop in the office. Most work is quiet and careful, with deadlines when papers are urgent.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 7–12Read widely in both Hindi and English: newspapers, stories, editorials. Practise writing short essays in both languages. Any stream is fine. Hindi and English as subjects up to Class 12 will make later study easier.
- Step 2 · 3 years after Class 12Do a Bachelor's degree. Choose a course where Hindi or English is a main, compulsory or elective subject, or the medium of study. This keeps your Master's options open.
- Step 3 · 2 yearsComplete a Master's from a recognised university. The 2026 SSC notice accepts a Master's in Hindi (with English), in English (with Hindi), or in another subject if Hindi and English conditions were met at degree level. SSC checked the qualification as on 1 August 2026.
- Step 4 · Before you applyGet a recognised diploma or certificate in Hindi–English translation. The other way is 2 years of translation work in a Central or State Government office. Without one of these, you are not eligible, even with a Master's.
- Step 5 · Paper-I (computer-based)Two parts: General Hindi (100 questions, 100 marks) and General English (100 questions, 100 marks), degree level. SSC's published scheme gives 2 hours. Wrong answers lose 0.25 marks (reported). Marks decide who is shortlisted for Paper-II. The 2026 Paper-I was reported as held on 8 September 2026. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Paper-II (written)A 200-mark descriptive paper on pen and paper. It has one passage to translate from Hindi to English, one from English to Hindi, and one essay each in Hindi and English. Final merit is reported to count 50% of Paper-I and all of Paper-II, along with your post preference. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 7 · Document verification and joiningYour certificates are checked: degree, translation diploma or experience proof, and category papers. A medical check may follow, as the department requires. You are then posted to a ministry, department or office, and join as a Group 'B' non-gazetted officer. Rules on probation and training depend on the department. Check your appointment letter.
Ways in
- Translation diploma routeDo a recognised diploma or certificate course in Hindi–English translation, usually during or soon after your Master's. This lets you apply right after your Master's, if you are within the age limit.
- Experience routeWork for 2 years on Hindi–English translation in a Central or State Government office, including the Government of India, and then apply. The 2026 notice asks for 2 years for junior posts and 3 years for the senior post.

Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
The 2026 SSC notice says the Junior Hindi Translator, Junior Translator and Senior Hindi Translator posts were identified as suitable for certain benchmark disabilities by the disability-affairs department. The notice lists which ones. Candidates with disabilities who qualify for a scribe get extra time. Women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates were exempt from the fee in 2026 (reported).
Try it now

- Class 10–12Keep a small notebook of 5 new Hindi and English words a week. Write one essay a month in each language and ask a teacher to mark it.

Good to know
- Many students think JHT is a paper of SSC CGL. It is not. SSC runs it as its own exam. Watch the SSC site for the Combined Hindi Translators notice.
- The same exam fills several posts: Junior Translation Officer in the Central Secretariat Official Language Service, Junior Translation Officer in Armed Forces HQ, and Junior Hindi Translator or Junior Translator in various ministries. The senior posts need more experience.
- The 2026 notice advertised 84 vacancies (reported). The count is tentative and can change. Vacancies are few, so it is wise to have a second plan.
- The age limit was 18–30 years as on 1 August 2026 (reported), with relaxations as per government rules. The application fee was ₹100, and women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates were exempt (reported). Always check the latest notice.
