Robotics Engineer
Builds and programs robots and automated machines for factories, hospitals and homes.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Seeing a machine you programmed actually move and do a job
- Solving problems that cut across mechanics, electronics and code
- Learning new sensors and tools as the field changes
- Long hours or night work when a production line stops and must restart
- Several years of study, with heavy Maths and Physics
- Plant visits, client site trips and pressure to fix faults quickly
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Physics and Maths compulsory, plus one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject. Colleges also set their own minimum marks, so check each college's rule. Or a 3-year engineering diploma for lateral entry into second year.
- First degree
- B.Tech in Robotics and Automation, or Mechatronics, usually 4 years. Some colleges offer robotics as a track inside a Mechanical or Electronics B.Tech.
- Entrance exams
- JEE Main Paper 1 (NTA) for NITs and other central institutes. State and private university entrance tests for many other colleges.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Designing and programming robot arms, mobile robots and automated production lines. Wiring sensors and motors, testing on the shop floor, and working with mechanical, electrical and software teams.
A day in the work
A robotics engineer often starts by checking overnight logs from a robot cell on the factory floor. Much of the morning goes to writing or fixing control code, then testing a sensor or motor on the bench. After lunch there may be a meeting with mechanical and electrical teammates, or a visit to the plant to fix a jammed arm. Some days end with a robot doing a task it failed the day before, and some with the same fault still there.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics and Maths. Add Chemistry or Computer Science, which most robotics and automation B.Tech courses ask for alongside Physics and Maths. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 2 · Class 12Appear for JEE Main Paper 1. It runs in two sessions a year. The 2026 sessions were in January and April, so check the NTA bulletin for the next cycle before planning dates.
- Step 3 · After Class 12Seat allotment for NITs and other central institutes runs through JoSAA and CSAB counselling, based on your All India Rank. Private universities usually admit through their own tests or their own merit lists. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · 4 yearsComplete the B.Tech. Pick electives in control systems, sensors, embedded systems and programming, and do at least one hands-on project and an internship. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · After B.TechStart work in automation, mechatronics, embedded or industrial robotics. An M.Tech in Robotics is an option for research or design roles. (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- B.Tech through JEE MainPaper 1 of JEE Main gives you an All India Rank. Central institutes such as NITs admit students through JoSAA and CSAB counselling.
- Private university B.TechMany private universities run a B.Tech in Robotics and Automation. They use their own entrance tests or accept other scores, and fees are usually much higher.
- Lateral entry after a diplomaSome colleges admit engineering diploma holders straight into the second year of the B.Tech, based on marks and sometimes an interview.
Time and money

What people earn
Pay depends a lot on the college, the employer and the city. A fresh graduate usually starts well below an engineer with several years of work on real robot systems, and people with strong project records tend to move up faster.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
For students with disabilities, JEE Main allows a scribe and extra time for those eligible, and a UDID certificate must be uploaded. Some state engineering colleges reserve seats for women; for example, Odisha's 2026 brochure reserves 30% of seats in its colleges for women candidates (state rule, reported).
Try it now
- Class 7–9Join your school science or robotics club, and build one small project with a basic kit, such as a line-following car or a simple arm made from cardboard and a servo motor.
- Class 10–12Look at the free NPTEL robotics courses. The course 'Robotics: Basics and Selected Advanced Concepts' is free to enrol in. Only the optional certificate exam costs money. Check the current listing, since course dates change.Open link ↗
- College or afterTake the free NPTEL 'Introduction to Robotics' course to learn kinematics and motion basics, then join a college robotics or automation club and build one working project.Open link ↗
Good to know
- Robotics is often a branch inside a Mechanical, Electronics or Mechatronics course. Read the syllabus, not just the course name.
- JEE Main is held in two sessions each year. The 2026 dates have passed, so use the latest NTA bulletin for the next cycle.
- Robots are built from mechanics, electronics and code together. Students who enjoy only one of these may find the course harder than they expected.
