What the work is like

Receiving a faulty phone, finding the fault, and fixing screens, batteries, charging ports and software problems. You also fill in a job card, explain the repair and cost to the customer, and hand back a working phone.

A day in the work
You start by checking the shop's list of phones waiting for repair and talking to customers about their problems. Much of the morning goes to opening phones, testing the battery, the charging port or the board, and replacing the faulty part. In the afternoon you update software, back up data where the customer allows it, and test the phone before handing it back. You end the day by closing job cards and recording spare parts used.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10Complete Class 10. This is the minimum education for the official Level 4 handset repair qualification. Learn to read job cards and bills clearly, because you will deal with customers every day.
  2. Step 2 · Class 11–12 (optional)Try the free introductory course on eSkillIndia, which lists 11th–12th as its pre-qualification and runs about 10 hours. It gives you a feel for the work. It is not the full qualification.
  3. Step 3 · After Class 10 or 12Join an NSQF Level 4 course run by an approved training partner. Check that the course uses the ESSCI Mobile Phone Hardware Repair Technician qualification or the NSDC Handset Repair Engineer (TEL/Q2201) qualification.
  4. Step 4 · End of courseTake the assessment and get certified. Make sure the certificate shows the qualification name and code. I could not confirm the current assessment and certification process from an official notice. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · First jobStart at a service centre, repair shop or retail outlet, usually as a service or test-and-repair technician. With experience and chip-level skills, you can move to senior work or open your own shop.

What people earn

Earnings start modest and depend on the shop, the city and how well you handle complex faults. Experienced technicians who handle chip-level repairs or run their own shop usually earn more than beginners.

Myth and fact

Myth: You need an engineering degree to repair phones.
Fact: The official entry point is a Class 10 pass plus a skill course at NSQF Level 4. Practical skill and careful work matter more than a degree.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Ask an adult to show you the parts inside an old phone, such as the battery, screen and charging port. Learn their names. Never open a swollen or damaged battery.
  • Class 10–12Take the free Handset Repair Engineer Level II introductory course on eSkillIndia. It takes about 10 hours.Open link ↗
  • College or afterWith a parent's permission, visit a local phone repair shop. Ask how a job card is filled in and how the repair cost is worked out.

Good to know

  • The same trade appears under two names. ESSCI's NSQF Level 4 qualification is called Mobile Phone Hardware Repair Technician, while NSDC lists a Handset Repair Engineer qualification under the telecom sector. Check the qualification name and code before you pay any institute.
  • The official documents give different course lengths. The NSQF qualification file lists 570 hours, while the NSDC page for the older telecom qualification lists 340 hours. Ask the training centre which version it runs.
  • The ESSCI handbook lists one year of hardware repair experience for Class 10 pass candidates. If you join without a course, you may need to show that experience.
