Electronics Mechanic
Test and repair electronic equipment such as TVs, power supplies, CCTV and control boards.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Hands-on problem solving, where you find a fault step by step
- Seeing a dead board or TV work again
- Working with tools, meters and circuits rather than sitting at a desk
- Long hours on your feet or at a bench, with heat, dust and solder fumes
- Pay can start low, and growth needs experience or further courses
- Some jobs are shop-floor or plant-based, with shifts and rules you must follow strictly
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 10 passed with Science and Mathematics, or an equivalent vocational subject in the same sector. The DGT trade needs a minimum age of 14 on the first day of the session. Check your state's ITI admission notice for the exact marks cut-off.
- First degree
- ITI Electronics Mechanic, a 2-year course at NSQF Level 4 under the DGT's Craftsmen Training Scheme. You get a National Trade Certificate on passing.
- Entrance exams
- Merit-based ITI admission through your state's online portal. The trade test is taken at the end of the second year.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Finding and fixing faults in TVs, LED lights, power supplies, CCTV cameras, inverters and control boards. Using a multimeter, soldering iron and test instruments. Reading circuit diagrams and replacing faulty parts. Working in repair shops, service centres, factories and plants.
A day in the work
A typical day starts with a list of sets or boards brought in for repair, often with a customer note about the fault. You test each unit with a multimeter and a power supply, trace the faulty part on the circuit diagram, and replace it with a soldering iron. Many days end with a test run and a short note for the customer on what was fixed.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 8–10Keep Science and Maths strong. Learn to use a multimeter and a soldering iron under supervision, and build small circuits at home.
- Step 2 · After Class 10Apply to a government ITI for the Electronics Mechanic trade through your state's merit-based online admission process. Private ITIs also offer the trade, usually at higher fees.
- Step 3 · Years 1–2 at ITILearn workshop safety, fitting and drilling, AC and DC measurements, electronic components, circuit and layout drawing, and repair of LED and LCD TVs. The course also includes project work and about 300 hours of on-the-job training or a group project.
- Step 4 · End of Year 2Take the trade test. On passing, you get the National Trade Certificate from DGT, which is recognised across India.
- Step 5 · ApprenticeshipLook for an apprenticeship in an industry or service setting under the Apprenticeship Training Scheme or through an employer. Stipend levels are not confirmed in this profile. (reported — check with the official body)
- Optional · After the tradeSome DGT Advanced Diploma (Vocational) courses are open to ITI passouts. Many people also move on to a polytechnic diploma in electronics.

What people earn
Pay for electronics repair work depends on your certificate, your skill, the employer and the city, and it usually grows with years of hands-on experience.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
The DGT curriculum lists the Electronics Mechanic trade as open to people with several disabilities, such as locomotor, hearing, visual and learning disabilities. A 2026 state ITI admission guideline also exempts girls and persons with disabilities from the government component of fees, in that state.
Try it now
- Class 7–9With a parent's supervision, build a simple battery-powered LED torch from a breadboard kit or spare parts, and note what each part does.
- Class 10–12Take a free basic electronics course on NPTEL to learn how circuits and components work, and practise reading simple circuit diagrams.Open link ↗
- College or afterSpend a half day at a local TV, mobile or appliance repair shop, with the owner's permission, to see how faults are diagnosed and fixed.
Good to know
- Electronics Mechanic is a skilled trade, not a degree. You can start work after the ITI and an apprenticeship, and move up with experience or further study.
- The DGT has revised this curriculum more than once, so ask your ITI which syllabus version your batch follows.
- Choose a government ITI where you can get hands-on lab time. Ask to see the workshop and tools before you join.
