What the work is like

Turning scripts and brand guidelines into short animations: logo reveals, lower-thirds for TV, explainer videos, ad graphics and social media clips. Working with editors, sound designers, writers and clients; revising work after feedback; meeting tight deadlines.

A day in the work
Many days begin with a client or creative director's brief and a check of the reference material. You sketch a storyboard, then build the motion in software, adjusting timing, colour and sound until it feels right. Afternoons often go to revisions after feedback, and you may export versions for phone, TV and social media sizes before the deadline.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–12Build a habit of sketching, colour and basic computer work. Learn simple video or animation tools for free. Keep a small folder of your best work from school.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Apply for a design entrance test. For NID campuses, the NID DAT has a prelims stage, then mains and a studio test. For IIT B.Des programmes, UCEED is the entrance exam. The 2027 cycle has a UCEED exam on 17 January 2027 and NID DAT prelims on 20 December 2026. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · After Class 12Join a 4-year B.Des or a 3–4 year BSc in Multimedia, Animation or Motion Graphics. Choose a course that teaches motion design, not only still graphics. Check the college's fee page and affiliation before you join.
  4. Step 4 · During the degreeBuild a showreel, a short reel of your best motion pieces, and a portfolio. Do internships at studios, ad agencies or media houses. Many people are hired on the strength of the reel.
  5. Step 5 · Early careerStart as a junior motion designer or freelancer. Learn more software and specialise in areas such as explainers, broadcast graphics or 3D motion. A master's in design is optional.

Ways in

  • B.Des (4 years)A design degree through NID, an IIT design programme or another design school. Entry is by entrance test and is competitive.
  • BSc Multimedia or Animation (3–4 years)A university science degree with a strong digital and animation focus. Entry is usually by Class 12 marks, and some courses charge high fees.
  • Short courses plus a strong showreelShorter training in motion design software, taken after Class 12 or a degree. Hiring depends mostly on the quality of your work, not only the certificate.

What people earn

Pay for junior designers is usually modest at the start and grows with a strong showreel, years of experience, and work for big brands or studios; freelancers' income can swing from month to month, and big cities pay more than smaller ones.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must be a great artist or illustrator to become a motion graphics designer.
Fact: Drawing helps, but timing, storytelling, software skills and a clear sense of layout matter just as much. Many designers learn the animation tools after school or in a short course.

For girls and students with disabilities

NID's application fee is lower for women candidates (except SC, ST and PwD), and PwD candidates pay a lower fee too. Check the current handbook for the exact rules.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Make a 10-second flip-book on the corner of a notebook page, such as a ball bouncing or a word appearing letter by letter. Notice how the timing changes the feel.
  • Class 10–12Download the free version of DaVinci Resolve and edit a 30-second clip with a title and simple animated text. Keep it in your folder as your first work.Open link ↗
  • College or afterSearch the NPTEL site for a free computer graphics or digital media course and finish the first two weeks. Note what you find most interesting for your showreel.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • Many people in this field do not have a motion-design degree. Employers often look at the showreel first.
  • Fees vary a lot. A government design institute and a private university can differ by many lakhs over the course.
  • Software changes fast. Keep learning tools after you start working.
