Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Talking with people about their goals and money
- Learning how markets, funds and taxes work
- Being your own boss and setting your own hours
- Income is uncertain at the start and depends on client trust
- Rules are strict, and mis-selling can lead to your ARN being suspended
- You must keep learning and renew your certificate and ARN every few years
- Class 11–12 subjects
- No set school subjects. Anyone aged 18 or above can sit the certification exam. Class 12 is often listed as a requirement in guides, so finish school first, but the exam itself tests mutual fund knowledge, not school subjects.
- First degree
- No degree is required. A finance background helps but is not needed.
- Entrance exams
- NISM Series V-A: Mutual Fund Distributors Certification Examination. 100 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours, 50% to pass, no negative marking.
- Licence or registration
- AMFI Registration Number (ARN), issued through AMFI, plus an Employee Unique Identification Number (EUIN) for each person who sells. You need both before you sell any mutual fund.
What the work is like
Explaining mutual fund schemes and SIPs to clients, understanding their goals and risk level, filling in forms and KYC, tracking their investments, and keeping records as the rules require.
A day in the work
Most mornings begin with checking fund performance, market news and any client queries that came in overnight. Much of the day goes to calls or meetings with clients, explaining why a fund suits their goals and risk level. Afternoons often go to paperwork such as KYC forms, SIP set-ups and records, which the rules require you to keep accurately. Many distributors end the day by following up with clients who have a review or a payment due.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–12Finish school and build basic money sense. Learn what a mutual fund, SIP, NAV and expense ratio mean. No particular school subject is required for this career.
- Step 2 · From age 18Pass the NISM Series V-A exam. It has 100 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours, needs 50% to pass, and has no negative marking. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · After passingComplete the KYD (Know Your Distributor) process with your Aadhaar and PAN, then apply for an ARN on AMFI's website. An individual receives the EUIN along with the ARN. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Before you sellGet empanelled with each asset management company (fund house) whose schemes you plan to sell. An ARN alone does not let you start selling any fund.
- Step 5 · Every 3 yearsRenew your NISM certificate by passing V-A again or attending NISM's one-day CPE programme. Then renew your ARN and EUIN on AMFI's site before they expire. (reported — check with the official body)

What people earn
Early earnings are often small and uncertain, because income depends on how many clients trust you and how much they invest. Earnings grow with experience, a good client base, and the city and channel you work through.
Myth and fact
Try it now
- Class 7–9Pick one equity mutual fund and follow its published returns on paper for one month. Note how it compares with a savings account rate and remember that past returns do not guarantee future results.
- Class 10–12Ask a family member to show you a mutual fund factsheet. Find the expense ratio, exit load and top holdings, and explain each in your own words.
- College or afterRead NISM's official mutual fund distributor page to see the current exam and CPE rules before paying for any course.Open link ↗
Good to know
- Your income mostly comes from commission paid by fund houses. Earning commission on your own investments is treated as a violation of SEBI rules.
- In July 2026 SEBI introduced a combined NISM Series V-D exam for people who want to sell both mutual funds and Specialised Investment Funds. V-A still covers mutual funds only. Check the current rule before you register.
- Each year, distributors must submit an annual self-certification by 30 September. If it is missed, commission can be withheld.
