Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Working with numbers, rules and documents, and solving real claim problems
  • A stable, permanent officer's job in a large public sector company
  • Seeing how insurance protects families and businesses when something goes wrong
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Transfers anywhere in India, and a 4-year bond that limits quitting early
  • A competitive exam: you need steady preparation over months, and vacancies are limited
  • Targets, paperwork and dealing with upset customers, especially on claim rejections
Class 11–12 subjects
No fixed Class 11–12 subjects for the Generalist post. Any stream works (science, commerce or arts). Strong English, maths and reasoning help a lot in the exams. Some Specialist posts (engineering, law, accounts, health, IT) need a matching degree.
First degree
Generalist: any graduate or postgraduate degree from a recognised university, with at least 60% marks in either degree (55% for SC/ST/PwBD), as per the 2025 notice. Specialist: a degree matched to the stream, such as law, engineering, medicine or CA/CMA. Check the notice for the exact rule.
Entrance exams
NIACL Administrative Officer (Scale I) recruitment exam, held by New India Assurance itself. The 2025 cycle had an online Phase I (100 marks, 3 sections), then Phase II (objective plus a descriptive test, reported), then an interview.

What the work is like

Underwriting (deciding which risks to insure and at what price), settling claims, running branch and divisional office operations, supporting agents and customers, and dealing with surveyors and hospitals. Officers are posted anywhere in India.

A day in the work
You reach your branch or divisional office and check the day's files. One officer may review a motor or fire insurance proposal and decide the terms. Another may read a claim file, talk to the surveyor's report and approve or query it. You also take calls from agents, customers or hospitals, check targets and compliance, and brief junior staff. Some days you visit a client or a damaged site. Every few years you may be transferred to a new city.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Choose any stream you do well in. There is no subject rule for Generalist posts. Build your English, maths and reasoning, and read a newspaper's business page. The exams test these skills.
  2. Step 2 · 3 years or more after Class 12Finish a graduation in any discipline. In the 2025 notice, Generalists needed at least 60% marks in either degree exam (55% for SC/ST/PwBD). The degree had to be complete by 1 August 2025. Marks in Class 12 are not the filter. Your degree marks are.
  3. Step 3 · Phase I (Prelims)Apply online at newindia.co.in when the notice comes out. In 2025 the age limit was 21 to 30 years on 1 August 2025, and registration ran 7–30 August. Phase I was an online objective test of 100 marks with 3 sections and separate timing for each. It was held on 14 September 2025.
  4. Step 4 · Phase II (Mains)A longer online test held on 29 October 2025. It had objective sections (reasoning, English, general awareness, maths) and a descriptive English test. The exact marks and timings are as reported, so check the official notice. Only shortlisted candidates were called. The shortlist for interview came out on 31 December 2025. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · InterviewShortlisted candidates were called for an interview. In the 2025 cycle, interviews began in January 2026. Bring your original certificates, including any caste, disability or age-relaxation papers, for verification. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · Medical and joiningProvisionally selected candidates go through a pre-employment medical check and document verification. The 2025 cycle's final result and medical list came out on 2 April 2026. Before joining you sign a 4-year service bond. (reported — check with the official body)
  7. Step 7 · 1 year probationYou join as a salaried officer on probation for one year. It can be extended twice by 6 months. In this time you must pass the non-life Licentiate Examination of the Insurance Institute of India. Without it, you cannot be confirmed in the job.

Ways in

  • Generalist AOAny graduate or postgraduate degree with the required marks. This is the widest door. It had 193 of the 550 posts in 2025.
  • Specialist AOA matching degree for the stream. The 2025 streams were Risk Engineers, Automobile Engineers, Legal, Accounts, AO (Health), IT, Business Analysts, Actuarial and Company Secretary. Your real chances

In 2025, NIACL advertised 550 AO posts, 193 of them for Generalists. Very few seats are available compared with the many graduates who can apply. We could not confirm an official applicant count, so we are not quoting one. A new notice for 2026 had not been listed as of 1 October 2026 (reported).

What people earn

Official pay

Scale I officer: basic pay ₹50,925 in the scale ₹50,925–2,500(14)–85,925–2,710(4)–96,765, plus allowances. Gross pay was about ₹90,000 a month in metro cities (2025 notice).

Pay starts with a fixed scale and rises with yearly increments and promotions, but take-home changes a lot with the city of posting, because allowances like house rent are higher in metros.

Myth and fact

Myth: You need a commerce or insurance degree to become an AO.
Fact: For Generalist posts, any graduate or postgraduate degree works if you have the required marks (60%, or 55% for SC/ST/PwBD, in the 2025 notice). You learn insurance on the job and through the Licentiate exam.

For girls and students with disabilities

The 2025 notice gave upper-age relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer) and 10 years for persons with benchmark disabilities. Those groups also needed only 55% marks if SC/ST/PwBD. Candidates with benchmark disabilities could use a scribe and got extra exam time (20 minutes per hour). The notice also reserved posts for hearing, visual and other disability categories. Check the latest notice for the current rules.

Good to know

  • The most recent full cycle was the 2025 recruitment (advertisement CORP.HRM/AO/2025). As of 1 October 2026, a fresh AO notice had not been listed on NIACL's recruitment page (reported). Watch newindia.co.in for the next one.
  • Dates, age limits, vacancies and fees change every cycle. Use the figures here as last year's guide, not as promises.
  • National Insurance (NICL) and New India Assurance (NIACL) are two different companies. They hold separate recruitment exams, so check you are applying to the right one.
  • The 4-year bond is real. Leaving early means paying damages of up to one year's gross salary, reduced in proportion to the service you have completed.
