Start as an officer in public sector banks, handling loans, accounts and branch operations.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Talking to many kinds of people and solving their money problems
- Steady, respected work with clear promotion steps
- Learning how loans, accounts and a bank branch actually run
- Transfers: banks can post you to any state, often far from home
- Very high competition, so it may take several attempts
- Targets and customer pressure, and long days at month-end or year-end
- Class 11–12 subjects
- No fixed Class 12 subjects. Arts, commerce, science: all are fine. Strong English, basic maths and logical reasoning will help you later in the exam.
- First degree
- Any bachelor's degree (usually 3 years) from a recognised university, in any subject. Your final result must be declared before the cut-off date in the notification. In the 2026 round that date was 21 July 2026.
- Entrance exams
- IBPS CRP PO/MT, run every year by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS): online Prelims, online Mains, Personality Test and Interview. The 2026 round was CRP PO/MT-XVI, for 11 public sector banks and vacancies of 2027–28.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Working as a junior officer in a public sector bank branch: helping customers, checking loan files, supervising accounts and cash work, and learning how a branch runs. Later you can move into credit, operations, or managing a branch.
A day in the work
You reach the branch before opening and check the previous day's cash and reports with the branch team. Through the day you meet customers who have a loan question, a problem with an account or a cheque, and you check that forms and documents are complete. You may sit with a senior manager to learn how a loan is checked and approved. Before closing, you help balance the day's work. Over time you are posted to different branches and sections, and some days involve visits to nearby villages or businesses.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–12Choose any stream. You do not need commerce. Build the habits the exam tests: reading English every day, practising mental maths, and solving logic puzzles. Read the business page of a newspaper now and then.
- Step 2 · 3 years after Class 12Complete any graduation. You must be a graduate with your result declared by the cut-off date in the notification (21 July 2026 in the latest round). You must also be 20 to 30 years old on the cut-off date (1 July 2026 in the latest round).
- Step 3 · Prelims (online)A 100-mark test of 60 minutes with three sections: English, Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning, each timed at 20 minutes. In the 2026 round it was held in August 2026. The notification says only Mains marks count for the final merit list, so Prelims works as a first filter. (That Prelims is only a filter is reported, as the notification says only Mains marks count for merit.) (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Mains (online)A longer online test of objective papers plus a 30-minute descriptive paper. In the 2026 round it was held in October 2026. Mains marks carry 80% of your final score. Wrong answers in the objective tests lose marks (reported). The exact number of questions was reported differently by different sites, so check the notification PDF. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Personality Test and InterviewThe Interview is worth 100 marks and carries 20% of the final score. You must score at least 40% in it (35% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD). You must clear both Mains and Interview. In the 2026 round these were planned for November–December 2026. A short Personality Test before the interview was reported as mandatory but non-qualifying. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Allotment and joiningSelected candidates are provisionally allotted to one of the participating banks, based on merit, preference and reservation rules. In the 2026 round this was planned for January 2027. You must show your original documents, such as your degree mark-sheet and proof of date of birth. Without them you cannot join.
- Step 7 · Training and probationYou join as a Probationary Officer. You get induction training and then work in branches while you learn. Probation is generally about two years, after which you are confirmed as an officer. The exact length and training differ from bank to bank. (reported — check with the official body)
Your real chances
The 2026 round (CRP PO/MT-XVI) started with about 6,715 indicative vacancies for 2027–28 across the participating banks. IBPS then issued updated vacancy lists on 20 July and 27 August 2026. Education sites report that the total rose to about 7,565 (reported). The notification says actual posts depend on what the banks report. We could not confirm an official count of applicants, but many lakhs usually apply for a few thousand posts, so expect tough competition.

What people earn
Basic pay scale: ₹48,480–2000/7–62,480–2340/2–67,160–2680/7–85,920, plus allowances and perquisites as per the rules of the bank you join. This is a bank pay scale, not the 7th CPC pay level used for central government posts.
Pay starts at the bottom of the scale and rises with yearly increments and promotions; your take-home also changes with the bank, the city you are posted in and the allowances that apply there.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Seats are reserved for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), EWS and persons with benchmark disabilities (visually impaired, hearing impaired, orthopaedic and intellectual disabilities are listed). There are also age relaxations (up to 10 years for PwBD) and a lower application fee of ₹175 for SC/ST/PwBD. The interview pass mark is 35% instead of 40% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD. PwBD candidates can use a scribe, and IBPS issued a separate notice for PwBD candidates on 7 August 2026. The notification we read lists no separate quota for women.

Good to know
- The 2026 round was for 11 banks: Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Punjab National Bank, Punjab & Sind Bank, UCO Bank and Union Bank of India. SBI is not on the list. It runs its own PO exam (see SBI PO).
- The age limit was 20 to 30 years as on 1 July 2026. The upper limit is relaxed by 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer) and 10 years for persons with benchmark disabilities.
- Your IBPS score is valid only for allotment in that cycle. The notification says the validity ends one year after provisional allotment. You must apply again in the next round.
- The last two rounds opened for applications on 1 July. Always check ibps.in for the real dates, as the exam calendar can change.
