Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Seeing small children grow in confidence over a year
  • Building a school from an idea into a working place
  • Working with teachers, parents and a team every day
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Money can be slow to come in during the first years, and fees are hard to raise
  • Daily stress from parents, staff leave, illness and safety worries
  • Paperwork, inspections and rule changes between states and municipal bodies
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 in any stream. Most early-childhood diploma courses ask for Class 12 pass, often with about 50% marks. No Physics, Chemistry or Maths is needed. A business or accounts basic helps with fees and salaries.
First degree
No national degree is needed to open a playschool. Most owners first take a one-year Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) diploma, or a related D.El.Ed or B.Ed with early-years focus.
Entrance exams
No entrance exam applies to starting a playschool. Diploma courses usually admit on Class 12 marks or their own entrance test.
Licence or registration
There is no single national licence. Most states need some mix of business registration, a municipal trade licence, a fire NOC and a health NOC. Some states, such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Haryana, also require play-school registration with the education or women and child development department. Check your state before you rent a building.

What the work is like

Choosing a premises and meeting safety rules; hiring and training teachers and caregivers; planning a daily routine and play-based curriculum; collecting fees; talking with parents about admissions, health and progress; handling inspections and renewals.

A day in the work
You arrive before the children, check the rooms, the play area and the first-aid kit, and greet the teachers. During the day you talk with parents at the gate, handle an admission enquiry, fix a fee query, and sit in on a class to see how it runs. In the afternoon you do staff planning, check attendance and sort out paperwork for a renewal. You leave after the last child is picked up.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–12Finish Class 12 in any stream. If you like working with small children, look at the Early Childhood Care and Education subject that CBSE offers for Classes 11 and 12 as an extra option.
  2. Step 2 · After Class 12Take a recognised ECCE diploma of about one year, or a related teaching course. Choose a course with a practicum in a real preschool, because that is where you learn daily routines and child handling.
  3. Step 3 · 1–3 yearsWork as a preschool teacher or head teacher in a good centre. Learn how admissions, fee collection, staff rotas and parent meetings actually run before you open your own school. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · Before openingPick a legal form (proprietorship, LLP or company). Get the trade licence, fire NOC, health NOC and any state play-school registration. Check the state's ratio, room-size and land rules.
  5. Step 5 · Before the first childPolice-verify every staff member, put in a written child-protection policy (POCSO-linked), set up CCTV and a first-aid kit, and keep a 1:20 teacher-to-child ratio as in the NCPCR model guidelines.
  6. Step 6 · Every yearRenew registrations and licences on time. Keep attendance, health and fee records. Re-check state rules, as they are changing fast.

Ways in

  • Own setupYou design the curriculum, pick the building and build your own brand. You keep all the income, but you carry all the risk and marketing work.
  • FranchiseYou join an established brand that supplies a curriculum, training and marketing. You pay a fee and an ongoing royalty, and you still must meet local registration rules yourself.

What people earn

Earnings swing widely. Income depends on the number of paying children, the fee level, your city and the quality of your staff, and a new centre may run at a loss for some months.

Myth and fact

Myth: Preschools are unregulated, so anyone can open one with a room and some toys.
Fact: Many states now require registration, and NCPCR's model guidelines set staff ratios, safety and fee rules. Police verification and POCSO compliance apply to every centre.

Good to know

  • Preschools for ages 3 to 6 sit in a grey zone. The Right to Education Act starts at Class 1, but the NCPCR model guidelines cover play schools and most states now apply some rules to them.
  • Under the NCPCR model guidelines, a child below 3 should not be admitted, fees should be collected monthly or quarterly, and no capitation fee should be taken.
  • Some states cap class size or require a minimum plot size. Haryana's published norms, for example, set a 20-children-per-class limit and a minimum land size.
  • A playschool that makes money is not a problem in itself, but the health, safety and staff rules apply to every centre, big or small.
