Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Helping a real person get through a hard time, and seeing small changes happen
- Variety: home visits, meetings, counselling, writing reports, working with officials
- Working with a team towards a cause you believe in
- Emotionally heavy cases, such as abuse, illness and poverty, can wear you down
- Pay can be low early on and jobs can depend on donor funding, so some roles are short-term
- Fieldwork can mean travel, village postings, long hours and uncomfortable conditions
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 in any stream. TISS's BSW asks only for a Class 12 pass in any subject stream (2024–25 CUET listing; check the latest brochure). Arts subjects such as Sociology, Psychology, Political Science or Economics are useful but not required.
- First degree
- BSW (Bachelor of Social Work), 3–4 years, then MSW or MA in Social Work, 2 years. TISS's BSW is a 4-year programme. A BSW is not compulsory. Graduates of other subjects can also do the MSW.
- Entrance exams
- CUET (UG) for a BSW at TISS; its CUET paper choices are English Language and the General Test. For the master's, CUET (PG) is used by Delhi University and TISS. Jamia Millia Islamia has run its own entrance test (2025 prospectus), so check its current rules.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Casework with individuals and families, counselling, running community and health programmes, helping with child protection and disability support, linking people to government schemes, and working in NGOs, hospitals, schools and CSR teams.
A day in the work
A hospital social worker might start the morning meeting a family who cannot afford a patient's treatment, then fill in forms for a government health scheme. Later she counsels a patient's worried relatives and calls an NGO to arrange a shelter for the night. An NGO field worker's day may mean walking through a basti to visit families, running a meeting with mothers, and writing up notes in the evening. Much of the job is listening, following up and paperwork.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 9–12Pick any stream. Build the habits this work needs: listening, writing, and speaking to people from different backgrounds. Do some regular volunteering with a school service group, a local NGO or a hospital help desk. Colleges and interviews like to see real experience.
- Step 2 · Class 12 (CUET UG)For the BSW at TISS (Mumbai and Tuljapur campuses), take CUET UG and also apply separately on TISS's own portal. For 2026 the TISS UG window closed on 17 July (reported). Other universities, including Jamia, offer a BA (Hons) in Social Work with their own admission rules (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · 3–4 yearsDo the BSW. Alongside classroom study you do supervised fieldwork in agencies, plus rural or community camps. Jamia's BA (Hons) Social Work lists a rural camp fee in its prospectus.
- Step 4 · After graduation (CUET PG)Apply for the 2-year MSW or MA in Social Work. Delhi University takes admissions only through CUET (PG) and its CSAS (PG) portal for 2026–27. TISS, which dropped its own TISSNET test for 2026, uses CUET (PG) scores for its social work programmes.
- Step 5 · 2 yearsChoose a specialisation. TISS offers MA Social Work tracks such as Children and Families, Criminology and Justice, Community Organisation and Development Practice, Livelihoods, Counselling and Public Health. Fieldwork placements run through the course.
- Step 6 · After MSWJoin an NGO, hospital, school, CSR team, government scheme or research body. Many people start as a field or project officer and move to programme management.
- OptionalUGC NET and a PhD if you want to teach in colleges. Short counselling or mental-health courses can add a specialism.
Ways in
- BSW then MSWThe most direct route. You study social work for 3–4 years after Class 12, then 2 more years for the master's. Best if you are sure early.
- Any degree then MSWDelhi University lists MA Social Work as open to any UG degree with 50% marks (45% for reserved categories) (reported). TISS asks for a recognised bachelor's degree of 3–4 years. Good if you decide after BA, BSc or BCom.

What people earn
Pay is usually modest at the start, especially in small NGOs, and tends to rise with experience, a master's degree from a known institute, and a move into programme management, hospitals, large foundations or CSR teams, with metro cities and big organisations paying more than small local ones.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
TISS follows government reservation norms, and its brochure has a section on reservation categories and the documents needed. Delhi University lists a lower minimum mark for reserved categories (45% against 50%) for its MA Social Work (reported). No physical standards apply for entry to the degree.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Pick one problem near you, such as litter, children who miss school, or lonely elderly neighbours. With a teacher or parent, do one small, safe act this month, like a reading hour for younger kids, and write down what you learnt.
- Class 10–12If you are 15 or older, register on the MY Bharat portal and join a local volunteering activity listed there. Keep a short diary of what you did.Open link ↗
- College or afterTake a free SWAYAM course in sociology, psychology or social work. Then volunteer a few hours a week at a hospital help desk or a registered NGO, and note what the staff actually do.Open link ↗
Good to know
- India has no licence or council that controls who can call themselves a social worker. Employers go by your degree, your fieldwork and your references. A published review notes that social work does not come under any national regulator (reported).
- Not everyone who does social work has a social work degree. In practice, though, NGOs, hospitals and CSR teams give more weight to a BSW or MSW from a recognised institution with supervised fieldwork.
- Under the Mental Healthcare Act 2017, psychiatric social workers are named as 'mental health professionals' (reported, from a published review). A medical or psychiatric social work specialisation in the MSW leads to hospital roles.
- Check that a private college's social work course is approved by UGC or a recognised university before you pay fees.
