Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Helping a young person or a first-time offender get a second chance
- Listening to people and understanding their family and neighbourhood, not just the offence
- Work that mixes fieldwork, court visits and report writing
- Hard cases involving abuse, neglect and crime, which can be emotionally heavy
- Few vacancies, differing state rules, and many contract posts instead of permanent ones
- Travel, home visits, large caseloads and possible transfers across a district or state
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Any stream in Class 12 works. Arts students who take Psychology, Sociology or Political Science get a small head start. What matters is the degree after Class 12: Social Work, Psychology, Sociology or a related subject. Some posts also accept Law.
- First degree
- BSW or BA in Psychology/Sociology (3 years), then usually MSW or an MA in a related subject (2 years). Some states accept a bachelor's in Social Work or Psychology for probation posts. Child protection posts under Mission Vatsalya usually ask for a postgraduate degree.
- Entrance exams
- A state recruitment exam for regular posts, such as a State Public Service Commission test. Contract child protection posts are usually filled by shortlisting and interview. Rules differ from state to state.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Writing social investigation reports for courts and Juvenile Justice Boards; supervising people on probation; visiting homes and schools; following up on children after they go home from a children's home; working with Child Welfare Committees, police, NGOs and the District Magistrate's office.
A day in the work
You might start at the court or the Juvenile Justice Board, where a magistrate asks you for a report on a first-time offender or a child who was picked up by police. Then you go on a home visit. You talk to the family, check whether the child is going to school and see whether the home is safe. After that you meet people on probation to check how they are keeping to the court's conditions and whether they have found work. You finish at your desk, writing reports and updating files, because the court relies on what you write.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Choose any stream. Arts with Psychology or Sociology is the most natural fit, but Science and Commerce students can switch to social work or psychology for their degree. Build the habits the job needs: listening, writing clearly, and staying calm with people in trouble.
- Step 2 · 3 yearsDo a bachelor's degree: BSW, or BA in Psychology or Sociology. In Andhra Pradesh's 2026 notification, a bachelor's in Social Work or Psychology is enough for District Probation Officer Grade-II (reported). Most other states and child protection posts want a postgraduate degree, so check the rules of the state you want to work in. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · 2 yearsDo an MSW or an MA in a related subject such as Psychology, Sociology, Criminology or Correctional Administration. Mission Vatsalya lists a postgraduate degree in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Law, Child Development, Public Health and similar subjects for District Child Protection Officers. MSW field work in a children's home, court or NGO gives you real experience.
- Step 4 · Written examApply when your state notifies posts. Andhra Pradesh's 2026 round for District Probation Officer Gr-II was a single computer-based test of 300 marks. Paper 1 was General Studies and Mental Ability. Paper 2 was Social Work, Criminology and Psychology (reported). Other states may add an interview or a different pattern. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Interview, documents, police verificationContract child protection posts are filled by a selection committee headed by the District Magistrate under Mission Vatsalya. Police background verification before appointment is compulsory. Experience in child welfare or social work counts, and the Delhi DCPO notice of 2026 asked for 3 years.
- Step 6 · Training and probationRegular state officers usually get induction training and a probation period before they are confirmed. Details differ by state service rules, so read your state's notification. (reported — check with the official body)
- OptionalAdd a PG diploma in counselling, a law degree, or an MPhil/PhD in social work. Some posts, like the Delhi Legal-cum-Probation Officer, specifically ask for LLB.
Ways in
- Regular state government probation officerRecruited by a State Public Service Commission or the department (Social Welfare, Women and Child Development, or Home). Permanent post on a government pay scale. Vacancies come rarely and in small numbers.
- Contract child protection posts under Mission VatsalyaDistrict Child Protection Officer, Protection Officer and Legal-cum-Probation Officer posts in District Child Protection Units. Usually need a postgraduate degree plus some experience. Staff are normally appointed on contract, initially for 3 years and extendable by 2 more.
- Probation officer from a recognised societyThe Probation of Offenders Act also allows a person provided by a society recognised by the State Government to act as a probation officer. This is a smaller route, and the arrangements depend on the state.

What people earn
Pay depends on the state and on whether the post is regular or contract. Delhi's 2026 Mission Vatsalya notice lists a consolidated monthly pay of ₹44,023 for District Child Protection Officer and ₹27,804 for Legal-cum-Probation Officer, on contract. For a regular post, Andhra Pradesh's 2026 notification 12/2026 for District Probation Officer Gr-II gives a scale of ₹44,570–₹1,27,480 (reported, from secondary pages; check psc.ap.gov.in). Allowances are extra on regular posts.
Regular state posts follow a government pay scale with allowances and a pension track, while contract child protection posts pay a fixed monthly amount that depends on the state, the post and your experience.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Age relaxations and reservations follow each state's rules. For the 2026 Andhra Pradesh round, relaxations of 5 years for SC, ST and BC and 10 years for persons with disabilities were reported, so check the notification for your state. The law also needs women in this work: each Special Juvenile Police Unit must include at least one woman social worker.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Read about Childline 1098, the free 24-hour helpline for children in trouble, and learn when and how children and adults should call it. Then talk to a teacher about how your school handles bullying and keeps children safe.Open link ↗
- Class 10–12Read Sections 13 and 14 of the Probation of Offenders Act, 1958. They are short and explain what a probation officer actually does. Write five lines in your own words, and if you are 15 or older, look for a safe volunteering activity on MY Bharat.Open link ↗
- College or afterDo a free SWAYAM course in Psychology, Sociology or Social Work this month. Ask your department about field work with a recognised NGO or children's home. Visits to children's homes must be arranged through proper channels, never on your own.Open link ↗
Good to know
- The Probation of Offenders Act, 1958 lets the State Government appoint probation officers. The officer works under the control of the District Magistrate of the district where the offender lives.
- Under the Juvenile Justice Act, when a child is picked up by police, police must inform the parents and the probation officer. The Board can also ask the probation officer, or a Child Welfare Officer, for a social investigation report.
- Post names and rules differ by state. A 'probation officer', a 'District Child Protection Officer' and a 'Legal-cum-Probation Officer' can need different degrees, ages and experience. Always read the latest notification for your state.
- Many child protection posts are contract jobs, not permanent ones. Mission Vatsalya itself encourages states to create permanent posts, but that depends on each state.
