Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Talking to many kinds of people and helping them solve real problems
  • Seeing a new batch of staff join, learn and settle in
  • A stable government-run employer with set rules and benefits
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Long preparation: degree, PG course, then an exam that may or may not have HR vacancies that year
  • Postings can be at a plant or mine far from a big city, and transfers may be limited early on
  • You often handle disputes, discipline and unpopular decisions, so you need patience and fairness
Class 11–12 subjects
No subject is compulsory in Class 11–12, so any stream works. Commerce or Arts can make later study feel familiar, but PCM and PCB students enter this career too. What counts is a degree after Class 12, then a 2-year postgraduate course in HR.
First degree
A bachelor's degree (usually 3 years), then a full-time 2-year MBA/PGDM or PG degree or diploma in Human Resource Management, Personnel Management or Industrial Relations. NHPC's 2024 notice asked for a full-time regular course. A POWERGRID notice asked for about 60% marks. Each company sets its own cut-off, so read each notice.
Entrance exams
Two main ways. (1) UGC NET (run by NTA), paper code 55: Labour Welfare / Personnel Management / Industrial Relations / HRM. POWERGRID, NHPC and DVC have used it. (2) The company's own computer-based test, as in the HLL Lifecare 2026 notice. Both are followed by a group discussion or interview.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Recruiting and selecting staff, training and career planning, employee welfare, industrial relations with unions, rules and discipline, and records. You usually work at a plant, mine, power station or head office.

A day in the work
Your morning may begin with a call from a plant manager who needs three more trained operators, so you check manpower records and open the recruitment file. Later you sit on an interview panel or plan a training day for new staff. In the afternoon, a union representative or an employee brings a leave, transfer or pay concern. You check the company rules, talk to both sides and write a note. Before leaving, you update records and prepare a report for your senior.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take any stream you are comfortable with. Build habits this career needs: speaking clearly, writing well, listening, and working in teams. Debate, school council or organising events all help.
  2. Step 2 · 3 years after Class 12Complete a bachelor's degree such as BBA, BA, B.Com or B.Sc. Keep your marks healthy, because PSU notices set minimum marks in the postgraduate course (for example, around 60% in a 2023 POWERGRID notice). (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · 2 yearsDo a full-time, regular 2-year MBA/PGDM or PG degree/diploma in HR, Personnel Management or Industrial Relations. Part-time or distance courses may not be accepted. NHPC's 2024 notice asked for a full-time regular course.
  4. Step 4 · Written stageRoute A: appear in UGC NET paper code 55 and score at least 40% in total (35% for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwBD, as in POWERGRID's 2023 notice). Then apply to the PSU with your NET roll number. Route B: take the PSU's own computer-based test when it announces HR posts. HLL Lifecare did this in 2026.
  5. Step 5 · Group discussion, interview and checksShortlisted candidates face a group discussion and personal interview. Some PSUs add behavioural or psychometric tests. In POWERGRID's Dec 2024 notice, the final score was 85% NET, 3% group discussion and 12% interview. Document checks and a medical fitness check come before joining.
  6. Step 6 · Training and probationYou join as a paid trainee. HLL's 2026 notice describes a 1-year programme of classroom learning, leadership camps and on-the-job training across units. After a test, you are confirmed as an E-1 executive. Some PSUs add a separate probation year, so check each notice.

Ways in

  • UGC NET routeTake the HR paper (code 55) in the UGC NET cycle named in the PSU's notice. Then apply to the PSU with your roll number. Your NET score decides most of your selection marks (85% in POWERGRID's Dec 2024 notice). POWERGRID, NHPC and DVC have used this route.
  • PSU's own test routeApply when a PSU announces Management Trainee (HR) posts. You take its computer-based test, then interviews and psychometric evaluation. HLL Lifecare's 2026 notice followed this pattern.

What people earn

Official pay

Management Trainee (HR) at HLL Lifecare, 2026 notice: trainee basic pay ₹40,000 a month plus DA during the 1-year training. After that you are confirmed as Deputy Manager, E-1 grade, in the ₹40,000–1,40,000 scale. Other PSUs have different scales. For example, SAIL's 2025 trainee notice (technical posts) gave ₹50,000–1,60,000, with ₹60,000–1,80,000 after training.

Pay depends on the PSU, its grade scale and the allowances it offers, and it grows with promotions. Housing and medical benefits also change with the posting.

Myth and fact

Myth: A good MBA in HR is enough to get a PSU HR job.
Fact: You also need to clear the PSU's selection stage. That means a valid UGC NET score for the cycle named in the notice, or the PSU's own test, and then interviews. Hiring depends on vacancies in that year.

For girls and students with disabilities

Reserved categories get lower cut-offs: POWERGRID's 2023 HR notice asked for 40% in UGC NET (35% for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwBD) and a lower interview pass mark of 30% (40% for UR/EWS). For some PwBD candidates (VI-B/LV and HI-Deaf), the minimum marks in the qualifying degree were cut to 50% where posts were reserved. The notices I read had no separate rules for women.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Take a small team role at school, such as class monitor, club organiser or event coordinator. Plan who does what, listen to complaints and keep a simple notebook of how you solved them.
  • Class 10–12If you are 15 or older, sign up on MY Bharat and volunteer for a local drive. Notice how you recruit helpers and keep them motivated.Open link ↗
  • College or afterRead the UGC NET paper 55 (Labour Welfare / Personnel Management / Industrial Relations / HRM) syllabus on the NTA UGC NET site. Note which topics you already know and which are new.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • A UGC NET score is only good for the cycle named in the notice. POWERGRID's Dec 2024 notice said earlier scores were not valid, and NHPC's 2024 notice accepted only Dec 2023 or June 2024 scores. So a NET pass from another year may not count for a particular job.
  • The post goes by different names: Management Trainee, Executive Trainee, Officer Trainee or Trainee Officer (HR). NHPC placed its Trainee Officers (HR) at E-2 level, so read the grade, not only the title.
  • HR posts are few and come only when a PSU has vacancies. Many students prepare for years. It helps to keep Plan B options open, such as private-sector HR.
  • Trainees are posted where the company works, which can be a plant, mine or power station far from a big city. SAIL's 2025 trainee notice (technical posts) barred transfer requests for the first four years. HR notices may have similar rules, so check them.
